4th ave at 16th street - what's it like?
Subject: 4th ave at 16th street - what's it like?
a friend of mine is looking for a roommate situation from afar. she was wondering what this area is like b/c of an ad in CL. as far as I know, 4th ave is relatively industral/commercial, rather than commercial/residential like 5th ave. also, isn't 16th really close to the BQE? is it safe at night? she's a grad student and would be commuting back and forth from NYU frequently.thanks

Do you know if its between 4 and 5 ave or 4 and 3. If its 4 and 3 let me know because all of Jays family live on that block and we know many of the other people there. There are lots of kids who live on the block and play outside together while their parents hang out on stoops so I think it is pretty safe at night. It is right near the highway but there is also the R, M train around the corner at Prospect. And of course you are very close to Lowes (he he he). Most of the people who live there have been there for many many years. They all seem very friendly and close knit. -

The onramp for the BQE is right off 16th Street (btw 4th and 3rd), and the beginning of the Prospect is right there...so I'd expect a fair amount of traffic and noise.
That whole section of South Brooklyn is sort of interesting. You'd be surprised how many people actually live over there, many small houses in between 3rd and 4th, up to a little past 9th Street. I'd say its working class, but quite stable. Lots of Harley owners over there too. 3rd Avenue definately has some character (and characters) to it.
Correction: just realized the onramp is on Prospect (not 16th). -
I just rented a place on 4th btw 14th and 15th. We haven't moved in yet, but I spent about an hour in the place today, and I was very surprised how quiet it was as soon as you get off the street. Even in the backyard--quieter than I expected.
As far as the buildings--the owner pointed out at least 6 buildings in that three block radius on 4th from 13th to 16th that are being taken down and made into condos. There are actually a lot of apartment buildings on that stretch of 4th. Way more than between 9th st and Atlantic.
Also, there's a laundry on my block and a grocery store between 15th and 16th. -
There's an incredible amount of construction going on - 4th Ave was rezoned and apt buildings are going up tall. I fear it's going to be a little like the upper east side all the way east eventually!
There is really really good takeout food (no delivery) on 4th Ave (10/11th St)
worth getting off the train at 9th St for. Homemade soup, good cooked stuff and really good tamales! Oaxaquenos and actual vegetarian tamales!
The place has a shacky little awning and sells flowers too...Flor Y Tamal -

I saw something on News 12 today about people protesting one of the buildings going up on 15th. I thought the re-zoning thing lowered the height limit?? Now I'm confused
Y-E-S! That place has amazing soup. Last time I had chili sausage, I think. Really huge portions. The large is good for two full meals. I could barely finish a small!

I drove up 16th St. on the way back from Fairway today. Between 4th and 5th it's mostly residential, although there is one monstrosity going up on the S. side of the street and lots o' construction.
The street itself seems to be fine -
It's Third Avenue you want to avoid. I walked from Park Place to 57th st. on 3rd Ave today and that whole stretch is noisy and smelly. Although I will say I spotted some very interesting eateries along the way such as a Halal Spansih place and a Roti shop.
I thought Prospect Avenue was the street that leads to the onramp of the BQE? I know that 17th street between 4th and 5th Ave has the onramp to the Prospect Expressway. Fourth Avenue is fine. I see a lot of shops, stores and service centers opening up between Pacific and 20th street now or days.
