Proposal: Clothing Swap-a-thon — Brooklynian

Proposal: Clothing Swap-a-thon

(This may only be for the ladies; I don't know if guys suffer from this malaise.)

You know all that clothing you don't want to give away because it was expensive and/or "nice," but that you know you'll never wear again because it's associated with something awful like a bad job interview or date or the day your cat died? Or maybe it's something you like that's just not 'you' and every time you put it you take it off and decide you'll wear it some other day. I'm talking about the stuff that you can't bring yourself to give it away because of the quality, cost, whatever; but you know in your heart you'll never rehabilitate or otherwise wear it.

I hereby propose that we all collect clothing, shoes, jewelry & accessories meeting the above criteria and bring it to some centralized location for a swap-a-thon.

<*Here, imagine the opening chords of L'Internationale*>

People are always posting stuff asking if there's a place they can sell 'nice' clothes, and we all know those places are few and they either don't pay well or only accept stuff from fancy designers. Together, let's see if we can get a better deal!

Hurrah!

  • yea i'd kinda be down. i have about 3-4 shirts and 2 pairs of pants I literally never wear. they're all pretty much near perfect condition and just got dry cleaned. Was planning to sell on Ebay but this sounds good too.

    caveat: I'm a 6ft 2in guy
  • good, yay, thank you, vidro!

now...anyone else? to work there has to me more than just me (a 5' 3" woman) and vidro.
  • I could get into this, but I suspect we will still have size issues.
I'm a 5'6" woman, and the clothes I want to swap are mostly jeans from a skinnier time in my life.
  • hmm. yeah, this does need to reach critical mass before it becomes practical. hence the "a-thon" suffix. let's see if anyone else is game and assess. if lots of people did it it could be cool...

    anyone?
  • I JUST gave away 6 full bags of clothes from my closet! Too bad this wasn't posted 2 weeks ago.

On the flip side, I still have another closet to go through- but unless this swap is done really soon, I'm afraid I'll just donate again. I hate having stuff that I'm trying to get rid of sit around too long.
  • I can try to participate to boost numbers although i dont have a whole lot- most of my clothes reach the point of having serious holes/stains/structural issues before I finally replace them (I'm an abnormal, non-shopping woman!) I might have some cute stuff in sizes 2-4. I have a LOT of size 6-7 shoes to get rid of.
  • OP here - I propose we put kibosh on this, looks like not as much enthusiasm as I'd hoped. Sigh.

I at least am stepping away, anyone else is welcome to take up the flag.
  • yeah sweetie... not lots of interest right now.
  • Give it a little more time before giving up! I love the idea, and I can bring friends!

I'm 5'5" and female . . . but I have to say, I'm always shocked at what happens at clothing swaps, size-wise. My favorite little black dress came from a friend of mine who's a couple sizes bigger than me. At the same time, I've had the experience of seeing a piece of my clothing on someone else and going "Oooooh! So that's how it's supposed to look . . . "
  • OK, goluxx.

everyone, i un-kibosh for a few more days.
  • re-kiboshing. some other time perhaps.
