anybody hiring?
Hey everybody.
I graduated school in december and have spent the last three months looking for work in my field (media, video/sound production) but have come up with nothing. At this point i'm looking for anything, I'm talking to someone at The Vanderbilt about a busboy position, so I mean anything. Wouldn't mind a not so great job if it was nearby.
Thanks,
Javier

You should def volunteer in your field! Great way to get in the door & so many people want help now but can't pay.
And, assuming you have bills I would keep checking out restaurants. -
I seem to recall a few places on 5th ave with help wanted signs. I also second the intern route. Score an internship that will lead to a job in your field, work afternoons at retail jobs to get you by meanwhile.

Hey Javier,
The Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting has a program called Made In New York which helps New Yorkers prepare for and get jobs in TV and film production. There's an Apr 2 recruitment event to apply for this program..Please read the info below.
- The “Made in NY” Production Crafts Training Program aims to help women, minority and struggling New Yorkers prepare for advanced careers in film and television production. The first class will focus on training individuals in the grip department. Future classes will provide training for other departments such as camera and electric.
Interested applicants who were not able to attend the March 19 recruitment event should attend the final information session on Friday, April 2 at 1pm at Brooklyn Workforce Innovations, 621 DeGraw Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues), Brooklyn.
Participants of the pilot “Made in NY” Production Crafts Training Program this spring will be taught technical skills by members of the International Alliance of Theatrical & Stage Employees and taught production basics and job readiness skills. Guest instructors will teach other skills such as rigging and dolly operation in the grip department. All participating trainees will be provided with a year of job placement assistance.
Ideal candidates are individuals who have shown their commitment to working in TV and film production for at least one year, as well as display an active interest for the grip department, but who now lack the opportunity to enter and advance in union positions.
If you wish to apply for the program, you are required to attend the April 2 recruitment event, where you can apply on site for the program.
For more information, contact Brooklyn Workforce Innovations, 718-237-2017 ext. 166, or via email at [email protected].
Javier, check out this website for more info and other opportunities to work in film and theatre...

Hope you attend the recruitment event and good luck to you! -
Subject: looking for work
Try the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It's kind of like a plantation but there's work in the yard.
Best of good luck to you -
its not video/sound production nor is it a full time job, but media-ish...are you good with photoshop, in design, etc? if so, pm me some samples of your design work. might have some small freelance design projects for you at my work. it could be some money and some additional possibly relevant experience for you.

thanks all for the advice. definitely looking into all those ideas. to prospect place: not very advanced in my design skills, but thanks.

Absolutely--but consider volunteering outside your field too--especially for something you care about. I left college in 1992 and there were no jobs. I worked as a prep cook and then at a bookstore, but I also volunteered for the county Democratic Party. Someone saw my resume and picked me up as a writer/strategist for a small campaign. I volunteered on several campaigns and was eventually working on state senatorial stuff--which paid (but not very much).

BUT - the wife of one of the campaign managers I worked with was the HR director for a company that needed a writer, and I got the job, my first salaried job, and less than a year after I started looking (I had been making rent by working at the bookstore).
It's all about networking--forget about your field for a moment and make connections. If people know you and you're putting out the right energy, you'll make the connections you need. -
Magiccube: By any chance, is your real name David Patterson?

Latner's, on Union Street, has a help wanted sign on the door for various positions. It might be a way to get your foot in the door while you pursue your interests.
Also, a good Temp Agency might help. I recommend Wall Street Services at 11 Broad Street in downtown Manhattan. Good luck. -
Subject: Internships = opportunity to prove yourself
Only a couple months ago I was in your same shoes, and I want to continue recomending the internship idea. All I can say is it worked for me, and now I have a full time job.
You may need to moonlight to pay the bills, but there are many paid internships in the media in NY. Work hard, gain experience, and get an opportunity to prove yourself instead of competing with industry veterans. The worst thing that could happen is you meet new people, like this guyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oavMtUWDBTM Life is strange and wonderful. You never know where it will take you unless you're willing to go somewhere.
