  • Now, every time a post asking, "what does the neighborhood need" get rolling, it seems that everybody starts talking about a steakhouse. Why is no one clapping wildly and racing over there?

See my clapping wildly above! I am not racing anywhere because I have bronchitis. ...and because I don't have the funds to eat out every day. They are definitely on my short list of places to try.

OQ raced right over there and it seems Veets is going to race there next time the urge to eat out hits her.
  • I am psyched to try a steakhouse nearby.

    <-- just sharing ^
  • I thought there was a good crowd for a new place with no sign (I knew where it was and we almost missed it) on a weeknight. And I'm not sure they have officially announced being open. I feel like this is a soft-opening and they are testing out their system, which was pretty smooth during our visit. I really do think this place has a better chance than many of thriving here.
  • strolled past last evening to check out the menu and peek inside.. the entrance is certainly the most-impressive in the slope.
  • Went there Saturday night and really liked it
The terrace looks beautiful (although since it could have snowed on Saturday it was also empty)
They also did a good job with the inside.

the place was crowded, most of the seats taken , including at the bar

very solid beer selection on tap – including six point Bengali

steaks were very good – we tried the filet and bone in ribeye – each between $10-15 less expensive than the premier nyc steak houses (strip house, delfrisco etc)

we had ordered an entrée as a starter (acorn squash) and it took a little while longer than a typical app; which we expected, but the waitress still comped a glass of wine for the wait, which was appreciated but totally unnecessary (and the acorn squash was delicious)

When the only two “complaints” are that the single bathroom is pretty inconvenient and the set up to wait for it is similar to an airplane bathroom and that they didn’t have brown sugar for my espresso, id say that’s a pretty good sign.

All in all a great addition to the neighborhood
  • I'm excited to try this place! Its high on the list, I've been craving steak lately and doing it on the stove or in the oven just isn't the same as nice a grilling
  • it's definitely high on my list and I like that the prices sound like a bargain
  • i wouldnt say bargain!
the filet i think was like 25 and the bone rib eye was 30
  • ^ Compare that with buying your own pasture-raised meat at, say, Union Market.
    It is pretty bargainish.
  • forgot to mention the dessert...pretty sure my wife looked at me midway through our chocolate cubed dessert and asked if it is possible for a dessert to be sexual...
  • my new favorite restaurant, hands down. Everyone should go there.
  • I went there this rweekend. Frankly, it kinda sucked.

The portions were small. I ordered some Kobe cut of something and if there wasn't scrape over 6oz there. Same goes for the very very average mashed potatoes and spoon full spinach that came with it.

My friend got the Fillet. The portion was barely adequate, and it was the toughest and most grizzled Fillet I've ever laid eyes on. I had to talk her out of sending it back.

Also, when we first arrived (at like 10:15) there were at least two tables of four wide open and one table for two - we were only a party of two. We were told the table for two was reserved (even though the people never showed during the 90 minutes we were there) and the staff acted really, really strange about us sitting at a four person table. It was kinda ridiculous.

If there were specials nobody mentioned it to us... also, we had to ask for bread - twice....also, garlic butter doesn't mean you put a little garlic next to the butter... jeez.... The whole place just left a bad taste in my mouth, nowhere near enough meat in my stomach, and it sure as hell ain't cheap.

For $5 more an entree you can go to a real steak house.... aged and done to perfection. This place will be done in 6 months.
  • We went there for brunch and it was underwhelming...even downright bad.

I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy and the biscuits were black and burnt. My over easy eggs were over hard and the "gravy" was flavorless and barely coating the biscuits. The whole point of biscuits and gravy is the gravy and this stuff was hardly there. It was also an orange color. WTF?

My wife had the Eggs Benedict. They were good but the home fries that came on the side were cold.

It's not like the place was busy so if they can't get it together when it's slow I doubt they can pull it off when it's busy. Too bad. I wanted to like this place.
  • Saw that...added my two cents for what it's worth.
  • Yeah.. I saw your post on Brownstoner. It was honest appraisal.
  • Went back this weekend and what a letdown!

We went during the first week and the food and service was fantastic. Sides we got (like the curried Brussels sprouts) were bursting with flavor.

This weekend, was all around pretty bad. Turns out that with the outdoor space open, we didn't need the res and there were plenty of open tables. We had a reservation and stood around for several minutes waiting for someone to help us as the staff pushed through us. After being seated, we waited probably 10 minutes before anyone came to the table (meaning we didn't even have water). And we weren't checked on.

Cocktails: weak, watered down, improperly made. Blah.
Bread and ramp butter: tasty, but only brought right before our food.
    App: sweetbread. good.
Steak: good cut, but no sauce as listed on menu. Cooked perfectly.
Side: brussels sprouts had almost no flavor this time, other stuff I don't remember kind of bland. The sprouts were so memorable the first time that this was a real letdown.

It took several minutes after getting our steaks to get steak knives, which we had to ask for.

I can't imagine going back after that experience and we're usually pretty forgiving of places.
  • OpossumQueen.. Thanks for the frank and honest review.
It is sad this this venue is a loser!

It is a pricey place. Frankly, I am not likely to try it.
  • OQ - sounds more like a service problem than a food problem (except for the bad cocktails and bland brussel sprouts).

I went last weekend and had a wonderful meal. It wasn't packed, but it was about 80% full. I hope this place does well.
  • ^ well, apparently the drinks sucked too
  • Steak was fine (but no better than a good home-grilled prime steak), but no sauce (as listed on the menu) and they were cold by the time we actually got knives to cut them with, which is a huge problem, imo.

And all of the people we dealt with offered poor service, including the manager (seeming) guy.

I really wanted to love this place and we've given plenty of places multiple tries, but I'll have to hear about a lot of changes before going back to Benchmark.
  • We (party of four) had dinner there a few nights ago. We sat indoors, because it was just too hot for comfort outside. Perhaps because we were indoors, the service was excellent. The waiter just couldn't have been friendlier or more responsive, and yet she was not intrusive.

Two of us had the bone-in ribeye steak. We each asked for medium rare; one came medium and the other medium rare, as requested.

We had to ask for sauce when we ordered; the waiter did not ask which we preferred.

All of the food (appetizers, entrees, and sides) was excellent. We were too full to want dessert.

    We will happily go back.
  • I've been disappointed with their steaks lately. If I can prepare a much better-tasting ribeye at home this place has lost some of its appeal.

But about the sauce - if you order a la carte there is no sauce that comes with it... you have to tell them if you want one of their sauce options. Not their fault.
  • Zebra, I wasn't complaining about having to ask for the sauce, but, on the other hand, I believe you are mistaken about no sauce coming with the a la carte steaks... If memory serves, the sauces are listed with the a la carte steaks, as if that is how those steaks may be ordered. Nothing else is listed in that section; all sides are extra.
  • Yeah, that's what I mean. If you want a sauce you tell them which one from the list; if you don't ask for a sauce they assume you don't want one. Some people don't like sauce on their steak... for example most people say Peter Luger steaks are better without. I don't necessarily agree, but that's a typical steak lover's belief. I don't think the sauces at Benchmark cost extra, if that's what the issue is.
  • Flexichick wrote: ^ well, apparently the drinks sucked too
    cocktails = drinks, no?

Anyway - just providing my opinion. I have been 3 times already and have had good service and good food each time. Its not the best restaurant ever, but it is a very good neighborhood place for an excellent steak.
