Cost of painting??!!
There's probably no way to really answer this, but I thought I would throw it out there. I will be getting estimates. I have a small, 600 square foot one bedroom that I want to get painted. Probably not the ceilings. A very ROUGH estimate given to me by someone whom I just gave the measurements to was $1200. REALLY? Does that sound anywhere near right? Thanks!

Quick response.. no that sounds much too high.
Keep calling people and get at least 3 estimates before you decice who does the job. -
way too high
600sq ft.... 1bedroom... maybe between $600 - $800 -
$1,200 doesn't sound too far off to me. The going rate for a good quality job is around $0.90 per SF of painted wall. I would guess you've got around 1,200 SF of wall to paint in a 600 SF one bedroom (you could do a check yourself with a tape measure) and, if so, that would get you to around $1,100.

sounds high, but do the ceilings too, it makes a big difference in the final look

painting is one of those things that will have a wide range of prices. For a high quality job that doesn't seem to high. To have a guy come and slap a coat or two of paint on the walls you can pay much much less.
Another big consideration is the condition of the walls, do they need to be repaired, holes filled, cracks dug out and replastered, etc? If so the price can go up. -

This is true, the down and dirty is for turning the place around to sell or for renting. If your walls are cracked, you shouldn't skimp on tape and fill, they come right back within a year. If you plan to live there longer term also factor these into you bill:

1. any kind of hand-cut work: closets, wainscot, combination molding, built-in cabinets, windows
2. if current walls are painted very dark, they will need two coats of primer, otherwise the dark paint comes through.
3. Cost of quality paint: Natura runs about 50.00 per gallon, great stuff, very low VOC (no toxic fumes).
In the worst case, you might want to throw a painting party with a few skilled friends, pizza & beer included of course. -
Thanks for the responses! It's a brand new apt and over the past 6 mths that I've lived here I have scuffed up the bland cream/white walls. I desperately just want to add some color. The only holes are a few small ones from me attempting to hang my own pics/objects on the walls. I'm going to get a few estimates. The ceilings are white and have no marks, so I will probably leave them alone.

If the walls are in good shape -- of if you just do the minor filling and sanding yourself ($12 in supplies), you could get a "less than awesome" painter to do a really nice job.
Far less than $1200. (like half or less) -
If you ever need a light bulb changed , call me, I only charge $50.00.

I will do a better job than Hamilton, but charge you $65.

Not to make light of this , but, I charge by the wattage and will turn it on free of charge.
