stray kitten

lulu's momma
edited November -1 in Brooklyn Pets
ok, I know there are a million stray cats in the hood that need to be saved but I saw a kitten today that I know someone is dying to take home. I would take the little one, but I have a dog that would eat her up. I tried to find a shelter that would take her in but they're all full. If someone has a kind heart and a welcoming home please take her. She's on Bergen betweek Vanderbilt and Underhill. She's living in the lot that's right next to the dude that paints on the sidewalk. I was told by one of the women that lives in the building on the other side of the lot that her mom lives in their building, but because they weren't able to capture the kitten to give it a flea dip they aren't letting the kitten in, which is INSANE since the kitten is still feeding from its mom. Anyway, I bought a little cat carrier to put her in before I found out the shelters are full. If you want to go get her I can give you the carrier. I feel awful that I can't do more...

  • Try calling 5th Avenue Cat Clinic, they often take in stray kittens and adopt them out. Their number is 718-398-1187. You could also try Hope Vet. Their number is 718-852-4219. The kitten will starve to death if you don't get it. Your dog can't eat the kitten if it is inside of a carrier, a large dog cage, or a bathroom. It would be really great if you could pick it up. You know where the kitten is and can easily find it. Having the cross streets alone is not always enough to locate an animal ... especially a small a kitten. I'm sure that someone can take it in. I just found homes for nine rescued kittens ... this is only one kitten. There are many people out there still looking to adopt.
  • Subject: i'm confused...

where are the other kittens? they are not letting the mom be with the kittens??

    cat.
  • My kids brought home a homeless kitten last night. It was one of a litter the mother had abandoned. It stayed with us, is friendly and purring. But I do not have experience in this arena. For those of you who know, what should I have a vet check out? And how much will it cost me? Thanks

Hope was full when I called a few days ago. I'll try the 5th Ave Cat Clinic tomorrow. As for bringing the kitten in, I wish I could but I think it's a bit irresponsible to bring a stray in when you already have a pet. Strays can carry diseases that your pet may not be vaccinated from, so bringing in a stray can put your own pet's health at risk and I just couldn't do that to my dog. If I had a pet free house I wouldn't think twice about bringing the fella in. If I had a shelter to bring it to, again I wouldn't think twice.

Masha, thank you so much for caring about that little kitten. If cost is an issue, tell the vet that you need only the most basic services, which would include testing for leukemia & FIV, rabies vaccine, de-worming, and (if necessary) flea treatment.

Animal Kind Vet Clinic on 7th avenue will give you a 10% discount if you tell them it's a rescue. They are a very good clinic, but even with the discount it is probably not the cheapest option.

    Other lower-cost options would be:

ASPCA – Henry Bergh Memorial Hospital
    424 East 92nd Street
    New York, NY 10128
    Telephone: (212) 876-7700 x4200

Humane Society of New York – Animal Clinic
    306 East 59th Street
    New York, NY 10022
    Telephone: (212) 752-4842

If you need financial assistance to help pay for veterinary care you can also ask your veterinarian if he/she can offer you a payment plan that would allow you to pay the bill over time.

When the kitten is 6 months he/she will need to be neutered/spayed. For this procedure, low-cost vouchers are available from an organization called Muffins. See http://www.muffins.org/index.htm.

    good luck!

fyi, Dogs can't catch diseases from cats, with the possible exception of rabies, but this is an incredibly rare disease and if the kitten is not biting I would put the chances of it occuring at virtually zero.
  • Your dog will not be able to get anything from the stray kitten with the exception of fleas. It's definitely nothing that a simple dose of Advantage or Frontline can't cure. I certainly would not worry about this. Diseases are species specific and can not be transferred from a cat to a dog ... with the exception of rabies which is very rare. Your dog will not get sick from a stray cat.
  • Any updates on the kitten situation??
