Dying Raccoon on Fire Escape.
This really sucks, a few days ago I saw a severely injured Raccoon on my fire escape, the whole back end of the poor guy was ripped out and his tail was barely hanging on.
It was pretty gruesome and I'm pretty sure that he was in a fight with a dog or something.
He was in pretty bad shape and It was the middle of the day so I know it's not normal for a raccoon to be out at that time. I have a little garden bed that I use in the Spring and Summer and he was just trying to figure out what happened to his tail and I think looking for a place to rest.
I tried calling 311 and animal control and of course no one picked up
Then I had to leave, I figured he just needed a place to rest so I left him alone.
I spent the whole day thinking and feeling bad for the little guy and when I got back in the afternoon I checked to see if he was still outside, but he wasn't there.
then a few days went by and no sign of The Raccoon so I figured he had moved on.
Today I looked on my window and he was back and looking even worse, his tail now was rotted away and you could see the bone, and his back area looked infected, his legs were shaking and he is obviously in a tremendous amount of pain, he looked at me almost with the saddest look and then crawled back into a ball in my garden and is now just shaking in a ball, I'm pretty sure he is dying.
I finally was able to get through to animal control just now as I write this and they said they only have one person to send out and that person is in Staten Island.
Poor guy. Hopefully soon he will be out of his misery. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I called a catch and release guy I used for a previous raccoon we had and he said because the animal is injured that he can not deal with it, and that it's up to Animal Control. Whenever they decide to show up.

when i was a kid (in the midwest), i put down a muskrat that had been similarly torn up by a dog with a shovel. very sad.
-
Please call Sean casey Animal Rescue. He has connections with wild animal rehabilitators and if nothing else can get someone to trap this animal to see if he can be saved or not. I believe the link is seancaseyrescue.org.

Just got off the phone with Animal Control. Someone is supposed to be on his way.
When I spoke to the agent on the phone he said the only person they had available was in Staten Island.
Meanwhile the animal is still curled up in a ball, shaking. -
Ugh...sounds beyond any realistic hope. Sometimes you just need that .22 - no way I would approach it if I were you. Raccoons are tough S.O.B.s, if it was a dog it tangled with I'm sure somebody is paying some vet bills...
-
That's some gross ass shit...
Flexi, get me my shovel and a six pack. -
The smell is pretty bad.
@ tsarina I called that animal rescue you suggested and unfortunately by law they can not deal with a injured raccoon. -
Also, rabies is back in Brooklyn and at least one infected raccoon has been confirmed. Be careful.
-
put a bullet between his beady eyes!!!
or snap his neck. i kill them for my friends, when rats get stuck to my friends glue traps. its cruel not to put them out of their miseries.
but in nyc you can't do much for the poor thing. -

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE FIND A WAY TO HELP THIS POOR ANIMAL There must be someone out there who can put it out of it's misery and tremendous pain. How about calling a vet's office for suggestions? This is a horrible way to die alone for any creature.
I had a raccoon when we lived on a farm years ago and they can be such sensitive animals (when raised from birth under only the right conditiions.) Max the raccoon would lick your tears away, purr like a cat and stroke your face when you cried. When this raccoon looked into your eyes, you were looking into his soul and he is in agony.
Can Sean Casey suggest anything? Please don't let it take days for him to die.
-
this would make me cry.
but.
please please please do not touch the raccoon. u could get rabies. -
Animal control guy came and the raccoon got away.
As soon as he opened the window the raccoon took off down the stairs, he probably could have caught him but I could tell that he didn't want to deal with it.
I did find out my downstairs neighbors on the first floor had unhooked and lowered the fire escape ladder to the ground probably to go up on our roof and that's stupid because that's how the raccoon was getting up there.
Sucks the animal control guy couldn't catch him, he had a cage and one of those claw things and he still got away. -
This is really awful.
My friends and I found ourselves in a similar situation once in Puerto Rico - the animal was a stray dog that appeared to have been struck with a machete.
We asked a police officer who my friends knew personally to shoot the dog to put it out of its misery. He did it as a favor to us when he was off-duty..I'm not sure if you could get the local cops to do this as "official police business" but it might be worth a try, especially since racoons carry rabies.
It was over fifteen years ago and I still feel sick and sad when I think about it. -
Maybe you could throw a blanket or towel over it to ease some of it's stress. I had a rabid raccoon in my yard once and was able to catch it in a hav-a-heart trap. The cops originally said they'd pick it up when I caught it, but it was a Friday night and the Animal Control was closed until Monday (or so they thought.) So I had to network my way around to raccooon rehab people who couldn't come out, but gave suggestions and one was to cover the cage. What I ended up doing was to soak bread in Kettle One Vodka and raise the sheet to throw it into the cage. After a minute of raging snarling, it got quiet and I heard a thump and he had passed out. He was quiet all night. Covered him again and luckily, the animal control came the next morning. He was definitley rabid and was to be put down, but at least he didn't suffer over night, cause he was in the later stages of rabies and blind among other things. I think your guy is probably in too bad of a shape to take this, but maybe he will and can just die or not feel the pain as much under the influence. He's probably too far gone to atttack, but Brooklynpotter is right that they can be vicious. Be careful and bless you for trying.
-
that's horrible. I'm freaked out by the raccoons who show up in my window at 2am peering inside and hissing at Stella, but that poor thing is suffering and in pain. I hope it doesn't suffer much longer.
Will the animal control guy come back again? -
Why in the world didn't he leave a hav-a-heart trap? The things in pain but may have come into a trap if there was the scent of food in it. Then you could have called him when it was trapped. Maybe you can get someone to lend you one. Possibly canned cat food to set the trap. I got the rabid one with the cat food and heated pepperoni pizza and caught it within minutes. And if the lender is afraid of rabies in the trap afterwards, you can clean it with bleach in your bath tub. Great animal control guy.....
-
The poor guy just took off into my neighbors back yards.
I hate to see an animal suffer and I didn't know what to do so that's why I called Animal Control.
I don't think he will come back to my fire escape because I pulled up the ladder but I don't think he's going to make it or at least he's going to lose that tail. -
My heart breaks for any living creature that has to suffer such pain. Bless you for trying to help the poor thing.
Do any of the neighbors know that this poor raccoon is running around in excruciating pain? As much as I would hope someone could help him, I would hope that the neighbors don't go into their yards and unintentionally cause him further pain and fear - or - inadvertently cause him to attack.
You might want to warn the neighbors the poor little guy is in their area - they may want to keep their pets, kids, etc. out of the backyards until he is found.
Can you call ACC again???? I find it inhumane that the last ACC person just left without at least leaving the hav-a-heart trap. -
why not put out a hava heart trap. do you need to borrow one? PM me if you do. . Then the raccoon can be treated and dealt with. . PM me.
-
where are you located?
-
If this animal has a strong smell to it, it sounds like the tail is rotting off. And with this will come infection and possibly gangrene. An all too lenghty and painful way to die. Take Tsarina up on the hav-a-heart trap, catch him and cover the cage when you do. Then call Animal Control and have them pick him up. They'll transfer him into one of their crates and give back the hav-a-heart that you can disinfect. This also means he's most likely not eating so he's starving to death at the same time.
It's incredibly kind of you to help this animal. Good luck and be careful. -
Gangrene, god that's terrible. I have no idea where the raccoon got to.
I don't think he will come back to my fire escape because I pulled up the ladder & last I saw he was climbing over a neighbors fence and the animal control guy was not too concerned with catching him. -
Poor rabid cat food stealing critter. I hear this kind of ass falling out thing can happen from too much anal. Whynot still hasn't found his colon.

What is wrong with you Scarlett?? You think this is funny?? Do you stand on the side of the road to watch a dying cat and laugh too? That was a sick and uncalled for response.
And what a shameful animal contol guy. That's his job and apparently he walked away from it. He should be reported.
Things like this make me so angry.
Now if thisdying animal makes any negative move towards a human or animal it will be treated as just "what raccoons do." When in reality it will be "what any dying creature will do instictively, including humans."
Please let us know when he's found dead so that all who had hearts and truly cared, such as yourself, will be able to stop thinking about the torture the raccoon is going through.
And again, it is wonderful that you tried. -

Really? Racoons are dangerous motherfuckers, not cute little beasts. Clearly you don't know. -
an animals right to live doesn't have anything to do with it being cute or not cute- no animal should have to suffer and die from a long-running infection.
-
Agreed. And apologies. It was actually my dog that got into a fight with him. Dog is fine, though. Too bad no one tried hard enough to catch the poor dude.

Clearly Scarlett, I DO know as I HAD a raccoon when we lived on a farm. And yes, they are wild animals even when being domestically raised. And all animals need to be understood that they are animals after all and that you need to be able to relate to them and read their behavior. I know about reading animals as I am a professional horse back riding instructor and trainer. So with that being said, your apology was appreciated to all that were concerned for this raccoon and it's horrible situation.
Has anyon seen the raccoon lately? -
If you see it again, please try to trap it. It's horrible to think of it dying a terrible death.

Hell, I'm thinkin' it's GOTTA be dead by now. Hope so, anyhow.

Subject: dying raccoon
You would think the raccoon would be dead by now, but that may not be the case. If it's just a matter of infection from the wound and a rotting tail, it can take some time to fully infect the animal to the point of death.
Have you seen him lately in the area?
