Mangy Squirrel? — Brooklynian

Mangy Squirrel?

independent mind
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Hi, I've taken to feeding the squirrels out back of my place, I put nuts and dried fruit out for them most mornings. One of the squirrels seems to have lost hair in patches--I was wondering if this is just molting for the spring, or if it may have 'mange' or something? It does seem to scratch a lot, so it could also be allergies? Anyhow, is there something I could spray on it when it is on my windowsill to help it? Many thanks.

  • mange is caused by a parasitic mite and requires a course of treatment, and often an oral medication. the one or two quick spritzes of something you might manage to land on the squirrel before it ran off cursing you will not help it. it stinks that your squirrel has something icky, but i think it is out of your hands. it's so good of you to want to help, though.
  • You may be able to get further information at http://thesquirrelboard.com/

It is a site dedicated to squirrels and those who love them. There are several certified wildlife rehabilitators who participate in the board and its forums.
  • Thanks, I wonder if I can address the mange through diet. I've been feeding it a lot of vitamin-c rich dried fruit hoping that their little immune system kicks into gear--maybe they were weak from the winter. I might try to sneak in a little garlic or neem oil with their nuts. I hope they aren't a lost cause, because they have the cutest furry red ears!
  • Hello IM, this is Booklaw's daughter and squirrel enthusiast. I think it's great that you're feeding your local squirrels especially because of the tough winter.

I don't believe you can treat mange just by adjusting diet, especially because it's easily transmitted. You will need to administer at least two doses of Ivermectin a few weeks apart, which is easy to do by dosing a pecan or some other treat. You can order it here: http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/inde...duct_id=15 61

I encourage you to read more about the problem of mange in wild squirrels at the website below. You can create an account and interact with squirrel rehabilitators.

There's a rehabber in the city and I can get her contact info if you'd like to skip these steps.

  • Update re. mangy squirrel. She came in this AM for her walnuts (I'm assuming its a she)--and it looks like some of the hair is growing back, though she keeps scratching noticeably.

I thought about it and I decided I'll go ahead with the extended course of 'pecans a la ivermectin' --I found it on Amazon.com, many thanks little booklaw!
  • You folks are so kind and caring.
    Thank you.

  • you are NUTS to be feeding squirrels! They are WILD RODENTS. They are PESTILENCE, not pets! I wish I could find a way to send the squirrels that plague my front and back yards, and are getting increasingly aggressive, to send to you.
  • I would like to nominate the following to be Little Booklaw's avatar:

    The Flying Squirrel

The Flying Squirrel is one of Tick's superhero students. She's very timid and doesn't have any overt powers, but it is revealed that she can call squirrels to support her in battle. Her battle cry is 'I like Squirrels!'.

(OK, Brooklynian, you've seen me at my nerdiest. Feast your eyes! I remembered this episode of "The Tick" from memory. Yes, from memory, and not vaguely, either. In great detail. Another Superhero Student was Sarcastro, whose power was his stinging sarcastic wit. I remembered that from memory too.)
  • PS, But at least I'm not as nerdy as the person who made the The Tick website.
  • Bricktop, that is not very friendly. Squirrels are people too.

lnelson, that is so thoughtful. I can't believe you found that graphic. I'm going to have to read up on Tick and The Flying Squirrel. Thanks so much! I just wished she looked happier. Like my friend Penny here.
