HELP!?! — Brooklynian

HELP!?!

I spilled olive oil on my roommate's suede couch. Does anyone have a cleaner they recommend to get this out? I used a Shout Wipe thinking that at least maybe the stain wouldn't set, but I think I might have made it worse. PLEASE - I really need some guidance here.

THANKS!!

  • No advice - except to Google. Check sites like About.com or Heloise or Fly Lady in particular. Good luck
  • Ouch. If you were lucky enough to have the spill on a cushion, you could take the easy way out and turn it over...
  • a stragically placed throw blanket? :P
  • Any animals in the house? You could claim one of them barfed on the couch - needless to say, it would be best if it were your roommate's animal...
  • ...or it may just be time to move
  • i spent 7 years writing a household hints column for a major women's magazine... that said, i wouldn't even attempt to get oil out from suede.

bring it to the dry cleaner's and ask if there's anything they can do, and if not you'll have to either fess up or say the cat barfed.

    sorry.
  • looks like you're gonna have to pay for a new couch -- how much is it worth?
  • if its just the cushions replace those ;).
  • Ok here's what you do...a few minutes before your roomie is due to come home, open some drawers, throw some papers around, etc. Leave the door ajar. When roomie gets back, say you surprised a burglar who took flight upon your arrival...roomie will be so happy that nothing is missing and that you weren't hurt that when he/she discovers the stain (obviously the work of the "burglar") it will seem like no big deal.
  • Or, get your roommate really wasted on their drink/drug of choice...wait until they pass out....move them to the couch...put open bottle of olive oil in their hand and then look innocent when they wake up

So, not a lot of practical suggestions here, but maybe you're laughing by now.
  • I know that part of how you get oil out of a shirt is that you apply talc or cornstarch to the stain so that it soaks it up. Let it sit with teh power to soak it up.
  • no matter what you do. you'll probably be boned anyway. so best just tell the truth and get over with. no more worrying and ploting!

Thanks for all the advice guys! I fessed up to it before I posted this - I should have been more specific in my post - I needed a recommendation for an upholstery cleaner. But since I didn't know what an upholstery cleaner was until last night it was hard to be specific. I did the good yellow pages thing, and I found out that they can spot clean it for not too much. Or I can have the whole thing cleaned for not much more.

Thanks AGAIN!! I have definitely been amused - the burglary idea was the best!!

True, but he's funny as all hell. When is that show coming back on. Anybody?

Dunno - don't have cable, but I'm working my way through season 4 on DVD.
  • I think that season included the Big (or maybe it was Giant) Vagina show. Too funny. He's not too easy on the eyes, though.

Anyway - back to the orginal poster - where did you find a good upholstery cleaner?
  • Subject: sorry - better late than never

I found several upholstery cleaners on google - but - magic, the tide marker thingy - got it out (or enough that even if you know where it was you have to look hard to see anything)

HBO just announced that they agreed to a deal with Larry David for a Season 5. No word yet on when it will air.
