Shame on those who left a nasty mess at 285 Lincoln Place

On Saturday evening I saw several men carrying out foil chafing pans full of food out of 285 Lincoln Place to load into a car on the corner of Lincoln and Underhill for Easter festivities.

One of them dropped a whole pan of stewed chicken on the sidewalk in front of the building.

To my surprise (or not) no one returned to clean up the mess. This was a large amount of food, not just a couple of pieces.

Monday morning, the disgusting pile of rotting food was still there. This is not the first time I have seen messy conditions in front of that building.

Obviously, some people have never learned basic civility, "If you make a mess you clean it up". I know little kids that do better than these grown men.

The super's helper finally cleaned it up around 9 am on Monday morning. The grease stain will be there for a long time.

    That's just gross, but there is nothing that Brooklynians can do about it. Complain to the super, or leave them a note.

    That sounds nasty and I wouldn't like it either, but I'm confused by this post.

    You saw something occur and you thought it was wrong. So wrong, in fact, that you want to say something. Why didn't you say anything to the person / people that created the mess, right after it happened ? Couldn't you have knocked on the door, introduced yourself as a concerned neighbor, and asked what the plan was to clean up the mess ?

    What kind of a result do you hope to get by making an (anonymous) post on a message board? Seems like being direct is more likely to actually have an effect.

    I'm just venting, I guess. Brooklynians can't solve the Lincoln Place dog mess problem either, but I see plenty of folks here chiming in about that too!

    I guess I just didn't care to confront a bunch of grown ass men at night which is when this happened. I was like looking at them in disbelief and saying, Are you really going to just leave this here? Obviously, it didn't work. ](*,) Wasn't much else I could do, I couldn't make them clean it up!

    Also, weekend messes never get cleaned up at 285 until Monday, apparently no one is available to clean up stuff on the weekend. What with all the loitering and littering, etc, maybe the super took a cue from Phyllis Diller: "Cleaning the (stoop) while the (weekend's) still going, is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing.."

    Let's see. Someone who is that inconsiderate and selfish you want to try to make nice with and explain good manners? Good luck with that.

    Yes, that is what I'm suggesting. I do it all the time when I see somebody littering, not cleaning up after their dog, etc. I just say "Your going to clean that up, right?"
    It works sometimes.

    Didn't the OP imply that at first they thought the person was going to come back and clean up?

    Some of us are not so good at real-time reactions, myself included, sadly. Mainly because we want to think the best of people.

    Unfortunately, there are still plenty of people who behave like slobs and have no concept of neighborhood cleanliness. I honestly believe that some people prefer a mess and having trash over the street. If it were in the DSM, it would be Ghetto Personality Disorder.
