Who here saw the movie The Landlord at BAM?

Filmed on location in Park Slope in 1969. It's a real sleeper, very funny in parts.
They make the Slope look totally slummy! In fact, that's the premise of the movie - rich white guy buys brownstone in the slum.

There was a great shot of the building on 6th Ave. where the Helios restaurant was, the one with the fancy windows on the second floor.

    Ha. Yes, that's something else.

    The one I saw is not on DVD, which is odd because it was directed by the well-known Hal Ashby, who also did Harold and Maude and Shampoo.

    One of the few things I remember about this flick is that Louis Gossett had hair...it's been a while.

    I saw it at the Film Forum a couple of years ago. There's a scene where Pearl Bailey and Lee Grant get drunk that was hilarious.

    I didn't start coming to Park Slope until a few years later (mid 70s) but I can say the depiction of the neighborhood wasn't too far off. Hell, even 7 or 8 years ago it wasn't exactly great over there especially late at night. I also looked at an apartment on Sterling Place near 6th, and it was pretty scary back then.

    That was a terrific scene and I was surprised yet not surprised to learn that Lee Grant got an Oscar nomination for that role. The Beau Bridges character is supposed to be 29 years old & Lee Grant, who was just 41 at the time and could've passed for younger, played his mother. That kept nagging at me when I was watching the movie. But she & Pearl Bailey were great throughout the film.

    Park Slope in the movie is a black neighborhood. I was wondering if that was really true or if it was true for a certain section of the Slope. I think the house that gets bought in the movie is on Prospect Place.

    I moved to the Slope in '75. Back then everything above 7th Ave between St. Johns and 10th Street was mostly white. Below 7th Ave, somewhat white, below 6th, black and latino. I'd say that Park Place and Sterling between 5th Ave & Flatbush was mixed.

    Write your congressman. It's not on DVD at all, as far as I can tell. Which I would love to see, because there's a scene where Beau Bridges is driving down Flatbush Ave. & you see a lot of stuff out the window, but it goes by too fast to identify in real time.

    Idlewild is right on the money about the demographics of Park Slope when the The Landlord was filmed.

    There are still some Afro-Americans families from that time, who did not sell their brownstones and are still in Park Slope. Mainly, but not limited to, St Marks Ave near 6th Ave, Park Pl, St Johns etc.

    The rapper Foxy brown was born , bred and still lives in Park Slope. I guess do or die Park Slope does not sound as good as do or Die Bed-Sty, lol.

    Rent, buy or see this wonderfully satirical film when ever you can. Njoy my lil' personal minute edit below. Bye the way, the block below is Prospect Place between 5th and 6th Ave, closer to 6th Ave.

    No problem. The film The Landlord and the changes that Park Slope has gone through in the last 30 yrs, has residents of Crown Heights wondering what changes are in store for their community in the next 5, 10, 20 or 30 yrs.

    Foxy Brown is from Prospect Heights, not Park Slope.

    SnowboardQueen: That's funny, I was thinking while watching the movie that this place seems more like Crown Heights than Park Slope. People of Crown Heights, we are your future! Beware!
