South Slope 5th Ave Bars and Restaurants

I need a primer on what's cool down there. I've heard of Sidecar, Commonwealth, but on a walk today I saw some place that starts w/ a K, some place called South, someone told me about Toby's (or Tobey's) --- what's worth checking out down there?

Comments

  • Toby's is on 6th near 21st. They make great brick oven pizza.

Like Sidecar a lot. Black Horse Pub is on the next block - both are on 5th near 15th/16th. Only went to BHP once, but liked it fair enough - they have soccer matches, so you can get yer drink on early in the day on the weekends......
  • Toby's Public House= BEST BRICK OVEN PIZZA IN WALKING DISTANCE!!
Lot 2=new restaurant, sweet, really great reviews
    Southside Coffee-kid friendly, great coffee
    Royale-Commonwealth-SideCar-Black Horse Pub-all bars within 3 blocks
    Ellis-closed.
  • Uh huh to the above and also Buttermilk is still worth a look, chill pubo n 16th. Black Horse has my heart. Owners so nice. South is a dream come true. Quarter has great cocktails and garden- see thread on south slope smoking- also 718 is a trek at 23rd but owners awesome and cheeeeeap drinks. Royale can be fun. Commonweath is hit or miss. Lucky 13 can be fun. Uuuummmm. Ok clearly I drink too much.
  • The K place is probably Korzo - Eastern European eats and great beer selection. They have a late night food menu which is handy.

Love Toby's these days - get the Bufalina DOC, definitely. Some people also like the smoked pancetta pizza since it comes with black garlic.

Sidecar is good for quality cocktails and late night eats as well.

Commonwealth is a good solid bar, nice bartenders, dogs welcome if that's your thing.

Black Horse Pub - also good beer selection, and bar food menu.

I haven't checked out Quarter and South, but those are next on my list - both bars, I think Quarter is supposed to be a bit more classy cocktailish, while South is more relaxed, and they have an outdoor space.

And don't forget to stop in Eagle Provisions for your take-home beers.
  • Went to South a couple of weekends ago...really like it. Laid back, good beers, very welcoming.

I like Toby's but the bartender (Bam) is a bit of a douchebag. The pizza's are good. Can't wait until the Lucali's spin-off opens across the street.

Black Horse is a bit of a joke to me. How can you call yourself an "English" pub when you only have two English beers on tap (and one of them is Guinness which isn't even English)

Quarter is more of a mixed drink kinda place. They have beer but they excel in cocktails. Very tiny however.

Commonwealth is great, Buttermilk is good too. Simple, unpretentious bars.

Don't forget the always overlooked Royale.

I go to Sidecar for food not to get my drink on.

Korzo does have a great beer selection and nice European (Polish, Hungarian) bites.
  • i guess to round it out, there is also timboos on 11th - very divey, but the price is right, and bar 718 on 22nd or 23rd, very small but nice. i had some friends over a couple weeks ago, and we did a pub crawl from Bar 718 to Bolands (on 9th), hitting all of the bars mentioned in the posts above. good fun.
  • Black Horse has pretty much the worst food you could imagine. The set up is all wrong for watching soccer matches too.

South is great. As is Roots Cafe a block down. Fresh bread from Lopez is good too.
  • Bartenders at Quarter are assholes - not sure why anyone would bother going there.
  • Ever notice how when the discussion is around real estate, new development, neighborhood boundaries, people insist that south of the expressway is in no way at all to be considered any part of Park Slope, South Slope, or anything Slope related. But when it is a discussion of a great new bar or restaurant, everyone seems perfectly happy to call it South Slope.

    I'm just saying
  • Well, if you're going as far as Bolands you should stagger over to Jackie's for that old school desperation. No, seriously, I love Jackie's.
  • Jackie's is great if you want to feel young again. Nobody's mentioned Smith's Tavern... it's only been there since the 1930s!
  • Jackie's and Smith's both on the other side of 9th Street, generally the demarcation point for south slope.
  • That's true, but if Toby's or Korzo are South Slope... The lesson here seems to be that drinkers know no boundaries.
  • They're mostly in the area the city seems to want to call "south park slope." http://tinyurl.com/yg9kqtz I usually call it Greenwood Heights (although that is generally met with blank stares unless the person lives nearby), but personally I prefer talking about beer and food instead of beating the dead horse of neighborhood boundaries!

I love the idea of a south south slope/greenwood heights/almost sunset park bar crawl. We should recreate that some day~ Anyone checked out that tiki bar waaaay down 5th? I saw a hash going by one day when I was walking home and for some reason imagined that was their destination...
  • I like to call that area Grave Slope.
  • DEEP SLOPE:)
  • Balls deep slope
  • South is the best new bar in a long time. Love the owners, love the attention they provide on their customers, love the buy backs, love the prices and love the good mixture of standards and new beers.
