They've been a mainstay on 5th for at least the past decade....yet I've never been tempted to eat there. The stretch between Union and 3rd street has lost quite a few stores and restaurants in the last 6 months.
Well, since it says renovating, I would say they are renovating!
I walk that stretch a lot and have only seen one or two places close. What am I missing?
I wouldn't assume anything when it comes to restaurants in 2010. Grecian Corner has been "renovating" for 6 months now! Not to mention the delay in getting the old La Bagel Delight space reopened.
As for the closings on 5th. Matter, Playa + bar behind it, The Indian spot next to Playa, Cafe ____ (on president next to the cat clinic), 3R living (as mentioned by Pitu below). The Tempo spaces are still empty as well. Its really a shame.
3R Living and matter I knew about, I don't count the Playa place because to me, that spot is always empty, LOL. I don't even notice ti anymore! it did better business when it was a dry cleaner years ago! I thought the spot next to Playa was taken over by a gift shop, no? I might be confusing it with something else. I really have to pay more attention when I am walking around -

Yes, it was a cigar bar/steakhouse before being Moutarde and before being that, it was a funeral home for many, many years. Don't see why they are renovating, I like the wya it looks inside of there, don't see the need for renovation
Wasn't that space a "cigar bar" before Moutarde? It was a good place to go while you waited for a table at al di la. -
you are correct, LTS.
the (terrible) indian place was taken over by scaredy cat, or however they spell it. it moved from across the street and their old space has a sign on it which says vietnamese sandwiches coming soon. yes, another one.
the only places i'll miss that have closed so far are 3R living and matter. -
OK, I thought that was the case because I did lots of shopping in skaredy cat for Christmas and remembered them being there. Noticed the new vietnamese sandwich shop on sunday, can't believe we are getting another one! So, that is 2 spots that are not empty, cool

bluecat wrote: [quote=belzjm]i heard le bagel on 7th is undergoing a renovation at some point soon, so perhaps this new place will be able to come in and do some good business.
Remember when renovations started at the old D'Agostino there was a rumor of a new bagel store. It turned out La Bagel was moving to the space. I don't know, just a guess, but maybe the other La Bagel is about to move to the Farms space btw Pres/Union.
can the new place maybe stay open past 5pm?
le bagel delight has horrific hours for anyone who works.
The La Bagel btw 6/7th streets has late hours.
I think they realize that the hospital never sleeps.... -

The new bagel shop on the Flatbush Avenue side of Union is not La Bagel Delight. La Bagel is not moving from its current location next to Neergard.
So yeah, it's another retailer without a clue, or perhaps with a death wish! -
maybe the competition will be good.
la bagel delight needs to up their game anyway.
btw, are you talking about the space on 7th between president and union which was the short lived fruit grocery or whatever it was...? -
brooklynpotter wrote: where/what is "get fresh"?
Get Fresh is on Fifth Ave btw 5th & 6th. Last time I was there the food and service were both unbelievably good.
As for why I was concerned, I saw a guy doing some kind of repairs in the front part of the store Monday. I couldn't remember if they hung a sign out front. In any case it wasn't there.

I walked by that space last night(old fruit store between pres and union on 7th) and right on the work permit taped to the plywood it says..."movement of kitchen equipment for conversion to a bagel store"
It does not say who or what the name of the place will be though. -
i vote for "bagel store" as a name.
-
So, belz, what is wrong with La Bagel other than them closing before 6:30? havent been in a while, used to like their bagels.
-
oh, the bagels are fine, but they aren't the best and they aren't usually very fresh. never had a hot one, anyway.
there are just better places in the neighborhood...bagel hole in south slope is the best bagel in the city, in my opinion and even bagel world on 5th ave can be good sometimes. i also really like bergen bagels.
it's not that la bagel delight is terrible, but having another bagel shop might make them even better. competition is usually good.
the workers at la bagel delight are sometimes really surly too.
i'm talking about the one in north slope here, btw.... -
bagel hole is our number one, second would be terrace bagels. loathe bagel world, those aren't bagels, those things are awful!
-
The liquor store on 5th near 8th St, De Silva's I think, has finally reopened sans the bullet-proof glass.
-
Oh my... that is a miracle!
Lived here 30 years.. never thought I would see the day! -
oh man, is it a liquor store only or a wineshop/liquor store?
-
La Bagel Delight added some outdoor tables in front. Looks nice.
What the heck is going on with the new Bread place going in the old La Bagel Delight space? They've had their Coming Soon sign up for months. Not too excited now about a place that can't get started up on time.
Few blocks down, Shinju(sp) has a large Grand Opening or Re-Opening Banner with 50% off Sushi and something else. Sorry, I don't eat Sushi . -
I don't eat discount sushi.
-
I'm sorry, but Bagel Hole? What bagel place DOESN'T HAVE A TOASTER????
-
you may not agree, canyon...but lots of people do...

Who needs a toaster if the bagel is fresh? Besides, there's a whole thread on this topic somewhere....
-
if you have to toast a bagel, it's not a good bagel.
-
uh oh, here we go...
-
I always warm up my bagel a bit. LOVE IT when the butter or cream cheese starts to melt off the bagel. mmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm
-
belzjm wrote: if you have to toast a bagel, it's not a good bagel.
Some people prefer toasted bagels. It has nothing to do with the bagel being good or not. -
Also if it's 2pm and I want a bagel and they're no longer "fresh," it still needs to taste yummy. There's no rule that you can only rank bagel places by how good they taste 20 minutes old, and I don't think Bagel Hole's stands up when they aren't. :-D

Either I missed postings on this or I somehow never noticed the store, but way down 5th Ave near 19th I think, is Lopez Cafe. It looks great inside and seems to have their own baking facilities in the back. Lots of folks were hanging out and eating plus they had lots of bread and sweets to go.
I remember there being a small bakery around there that I think was called Lopez, but this is a much bigger, and nice, space. -
Lopez Bakery........I finally went inside and was just talking about it last night. Rosemary bread = $2.85 for a big loaf.
-
When Lopez first opened on 5th Ave (around the corner from me) I made my almost daily visit and purchase. In those years it was often a "middle of the night" run because they were there 24/7 and baked late night to early morning and the door was open.
Flexi.. Happy to hear that such small but enormous joys are still available for $2.85.
Howdy, Stranger!
