Random Observation in PS
So I always thought that guy in Park Slope that goes around ripping signs from the lamp posts was some kind of eco-warrior, but after happening to walk behind him for about 5 blocks yesterday afternoon I realized he's just nuts. Before I witnessed him taking down signs I noticed him taking garbage out of the bins and throwing it on the ground. Gee, Dude, I almost had respect for you when you were just that guy who takes down stoop sale ads. Thanks for making it clear you're disturbed. I'll keep a wide berth from now on.

Yeah there's a thread about the crazy mofo on the PS board from about a year ago.
-
Well, then, the guy might just be mentally unstable. Maybe he deserves a little compassion.
-
Compassion from a distance. Dude uses a knife to take down the signs. And he's really violent about it...
-
He looks like a young Rudy Giuliani.
-
he could be related to my plant thief on a bike!!
-
I believe a relative of this gentleman posted a message threatening legal action against those who would disparage him. Be careful! 8-[
-
Yeah she did, but it was idle threats. The guy does have a mental illness, like I mentioned the neighborhood knows about him, and he's violent. Don't confront him.
-
Thank you, Mamacita!
Mine was just a public service announcement. I had always thought of him as harmless until a few days ago...
This guy is armed and unstable. Be careful around him. -
Guys, have a little compassion. This guy is sick.
I almost had respect for you when you were just that guy who takes down stoop sale ads. Thanks for making it clear you're disturbed.
Its really sad that you have less respect for someone who is mentally ill than you do for a normal. -
He was peeling locksmith signs of the gate where i work on Smith St. the other day and I asked him if was the same guy who does it in Park Slope, he completely ignored me, I think he is just an ass-hole.
-
I've talked to him several times and don't find him at all dangerous. Yes, he's mentally disabled, but violent? Really? You should back that up with, you know, observations or facts if you're going to make that charge.
I just wish he'd take down billboards too :clown: -
Anthony,
He was violently attacking a sign with a knife and acting all kinds of erratic. I was scared for me and Stanley. The entire purpose of my posting was to let everyone know he might not be as harmless as originally thought. Perhaps he was on his meds when you spoke to him.
I'm done posting here. My message was clear.
p.s. I still love you, even though we have a difference of opinion sometimes.
Have a great weekend!!! -
:flower: dats right, it is the weekend, and not a 90 degree humid one (yet)!
Have a great weekend everyone! -
Could be a meds issue (sometimes he seems more "there" than other times), but I still don't think he'd get violent against anything but inanimate objects. The woman who talks to herself and once assaulted a baby with her cigarette is back, I think she's a lot more concerning.
I still wouldn't mind if the guy took down billboards (nor would I mind some more 90 degree days!). -
i believe he's autistic and NOT physically violent toward other people. if you search on the board there is a posting from his very caring sister stating that she and the family were very worried about him because everyone hated him so much. and that if you just left him alone he was harmless.
check the archives, pls. -
If he's going after signs with a knife and is pulling garbage out of bins, he's unlikely to be left alone for long. If he then becomes harmful towards others, I suspect 911 will be the result.
-
i really encourage you to search the archives--or for the mods too, i'm really tired right now. his sister especially came here to raise awareness and qualm her fears about her brother. perhaps you can find some compassion and spread the word to those who mention it?
we all spend hours bashing everyone on this board; must we go there for a mentally disabled grown man whose only crime is pulling down stoop sale signs? -
Well, I don't know Potter. I have it on good authority that the weekend is not an acceptable time to defend people from anonymous character attacks. But I'm no longer anonymous, so with snark now turned off let me say:
Anyone who remembers the "bad old days" (and make no mistake, we're heading that way again) should have developed the skill to asses potential threats, and gauge who represents a serious threat and who does not.
Working in the streets, and being someone who does remember New York in the 80's, I've seen some troubling signs lately. There've been a lot more thugs in every neighborhood, including the Slope. Twice last week I saw large groups of erratic teenagers going up and down Fifth Avenue, both times when I've worked into the early evening. The shelter systems have less funding and more demand. Other social support structures are experiencing similar stresses. In general, I think we're going to see a lot more "crimes of opportunity" (i.e. muggings, shoplifting, burglaries, etc).
So, since this thread was meant to be a public service announcement, I thought I would add my two cents in that vein. Be safe on the street: if someone (even the flyer-removing guy I think is harmless) makes you uncomfortable, keep your distance (but don't act nervous). If possible, stay off the streets late at night; if not possible try to travel in groups and in well lit, well populated areas as much as possible. Don't use cell phones in public unless you have to. Don't use headphones in public. Don't take the subway late at night, again if possible. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. And so on.
And Li'l ole Me? I'm glad we can disagree on some things and still maintain a good relationship. I didn't know who you are until you mentioned Stanley. I don't mind at all that you gave my name on the internet (and as far as I'm aware I'm the only Park Slope dogwalker with my very common first name). But I think it would have been courteous for you to ask me first if that was all right. For those that don't know me in three dimensions: I'm a lot more likely to post on here when I disagree than when I agree, and when I feel that I have something to add to a discussion which hasn't already been represented.
And yes, I know I'm very serious, probably to a fault. -
"hunter.gatherer"
I have to say, I didn't notice her using your real name, but you should know that anyone with basic internet researching and deducting skills already knew who you were. It's a smaller world then you think. That said, sometimes people slip up and accidentally mention a real name instead of the fake name (I've done that with other members here that I know in person, just because it was habit to call them by their first name), I'm assume it wasn't done on purpose. -
hunter.gatherer, i think you should reread this thread. i didn't use your name, i don't know who you are. i'm not sure why you're directing your longer posting toward me because i was here defending the man who pulls down the flyers.
-
It was only the first paragraph that was half directed at you Potter, and I realize we're on the same side on this. The other (snarky) half of that short paragraph was @Mamacita.
The part about revealing my name was very clearly directed at Li'l ole Me, who revealed my name (and it easily could have been an accident, like the mod says). Either way I don't mind, I know how small the world is and I'm not so different online from real life. I've said before that I assume some on these boards know who I am, and I'm not very guarded about my anonymity: my flickr name is the same as this one and on other sites I'm hunter.blatherer. I always thought it would be interesting to see when and how it would come out. -
Ow man, why you got to be all snarky! Sheesh, I've lost all faith in the internets...

Oh Lord, when will the semioclasty end?
