Rossman's

Subject: Rossman's

Am I the only one who has noticed that Rossman's has been Le Suck lately? I know that produce in general has been crap due to bad weather, hurricanes, etc., but prices at Rossman's seem to be creeping up and quality seems to be taking a nosedive in the past several months.

I am crossing my fingers that this is temporary and not a result of them trying to fancy up the joint (new display cases, homemade hummus, etc.)

  • I second your price/quality observations, have recently gotten better deals on some produce items (cabbage $.19/lb!) at Pathmark which never used to be the case.

I'm going to see what the summer brings, not giving up on Rossman's just yet.
  • I am not ready to give up yet either. Some things are still fine - lettuce, etc. But Kirby cucumbers at $1.39/lb instead of $0.69 -$0.79 when I can find them cheaper at Key Food? Something is off lately in a big way.
  • Two weeks ago I was at Fairway and the produce there was pretty poor as well. I couldn't find one good green bell pepper - they were all shriveled up and mushy. The tomatoes were a sore sight as well. C-town also hasn't been great- so maybe its a problem across the board?
  • Tomatoes are definitely a problem. All of the crops were wiped out and are not expected to rebound until late April at better prices. I know that a lot of other veggies suffered as well (depending on where they are grown), but when I see better produce at Key Foods and better/cheaper strawberries at my bodega, I'm disappointed in Rossman's.

Am hoping that this is temporary and they rebound. Next time I see the manager I plan on asking him what's up. On Wednesday I was already paid and out the door when I caught sight of him coming out the back.......too late to catch a word.
  • we talk so much about supporting local farmers, etc..and yet as brooklynites, can we ever imagine how hard it is? working hard all year long and yet dependent upon the arbitrary nature of nature.
guess i'll be chattin up the fellas at the green market this weekend to see what we can expect for summer.
  • I know it's hard - I farm in my own backyard and I am disappointed when my plants die and I am doing it for fun and recreation and tasty food. I don't do it to support myself. I can't even imagine how hard it is to make a living at it.
  • Rossman's got hit hard last year with tax problems, so maybe finances are catching up with them?
