Moving to 9th st between 3rd and 4th ave? Hows the area/bloc

I found a very reasonably priced apartment on 9th street between 3rd and 4th ave. I heard rumors that this block has had a bad reputation in the past, and I am wondering what it is like now? (Prostitution, etc.) I am a female in my early twenties...is this block a good idea or should I keep looking?

Thanks

  • Damn! Sorry I missed your post, you're probably already moved or found another place. Did you end up moving in? How are you liking it?
  • If you don't walk past 9th Street (towards 10th Street) on 3rd Ave., it's all peaches. There is a nice looking bar on the corner of 3rd Ave. & 9th Street. It kind of marks where civilization begins.

... why "don't walk past 9th Street"? What's the danger. Very interested, as I'm thinking of moving around 14th and 3rd!
  • I don't think there's any "danger" as much as you need to be a little careful especially in the evening/night. This post was from 2008.

Right now, I'm perfectly OK walking around that area, but I don't wear headphones, I don't talk on my fancy phone, I keep my eyes out for any truants (dumb kids that are bored and angry, just looking for trouble), homeless men, etc.. I don't walk around there late at night unless I have my boyfriend with me.

If you are moving there, then take a day off and visit the area, go during the day and later in the evening. Only you can say how comfortable you'll feel. Everyone is different.
  • I've been living on 13th and 3rd/4th ave. for more than a year. It's as everywhere else. Keep your eyes open and be smart. I feel self walking home day or late evening even if I'm a woman and alone.

This neighborhood is not what it used to be. It's only getting better by the day.
  • its alot better now than it used to be... the block of third bet 8/9 was one of the best gang hangouts / drug supermarkets/ prostitution area if you were into that sort of thing... Lately its been cleaned up alot...although i would advise walking by the elevated train late at night alone... Slowly the tide is turning so it gets better down there but its still not the best area to be in
  • I walk down that block at all times of the day and night and never had a problem.

However I wouldnt walk to the Smith and 9th stop when its dark. Take the 9th and 4th ave stop instead.
  • This thread has to end. I've lived on this block for 6 years and NEVER had a problem. I've actually never had a problem anywhere in this city, as long as you keep your wits about you and be mindful of your surroundings.
But seriously, this post is from 2008. Kill it!
