Union Street between Utica and Rochester-Safe? — Brooklynian

Union Street between Utica and Rochester-Safe?

I'm thinking about a summer sublet on Union Street between Utica and Rochester, but I've heard lots of different things about safety in this area. Is it a bad idea to move in if I'm a young female coming home around 1 or 2 AM on the weekends? Sorry if this is an obvious question, I'm just not familiar with the area.

  • I would not recommend it; I would look for something further west. The location you mentioned is close to the crime ridden parts of Crown Heights.
  • I'm not familiar with that area, but as general advice, women should take cabs when coming home that late, no matter what neighborhood. That has been my habit for the 15 years I've lived in nyc - save money some other way, but don't skimp on safety :)

That makes a lot of sense. I feel like cabs might not want to go all the way out there though, so I guess I'd have to find a car service or something.
  • Just google shooting and type in the cross streets
  • I have been out there during those times and it is actually pretty calm. But Utica is like Nostrand x 5, and Nostrand itself is pretty dangerous.

For the money you can easily get something in South Greenpoint or even a decent block in Harlem. Think about it.
  • OMG!!!!!! its quite obvious none of you travel past Classon Ave..I've lived in this neighborhood for 4yrs now and have never had an issue. The neighborhood is full of hard working people. The only difference is it hasn't been fully gentrified..which always has its pros and cons..

    Pros
Blocks away from Eastern Pkwy and it's a predominately Caribbean area so there are a ton of fruit and veggie stands as well as the Weeksville Farmer's market that sell far better food at a great price point then the grocery stores in prospect heights on Washington.

    Cons
there isn't enough variety of restaurants, cafe's, and coffee shops aside from the Caribbean and Dominican places because businesses feel there is not enough economy to support them. So everyone goes to Ft.Green, Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, and other parts of Brooklyn for entertainment.

funny that cool the kid mentions Harlem, people was saying the same thing when i lived there 10yrs ago and now that it has become heavily gentrified and Bill Clinton moved up there its the place to be..give me a break already

Harlem has changed, but a lot of it hasn't. I have lots of friends there who complain about safety, loitering, cleanliness, blah, blah, blah. They aren't as extreme and over the top of cool the kid, though. He makes CH seem like a war zone.
  • Loitering? Reminds me of this recent ruling.

"In a blunt, 44-page critique, a federal judge in Manhattan held New York City in contempt of court on Monday for failing to comply with orders to stop enforcing loitering laws that were ruled unconstitutional about two decades ago."
