3 abandoned cats need homes — Brooklynian

3 abandoned cats need homes

anonymous
edited November -1 in Brooklyn Pets
Somebody kindly dumped their pet cats on our street and abandoned them. There are three. Two brothers? white and tortoise shell (fixed) maybe 1-2 years old. Very friendly and healthy looking. An older white DECLAWED cat that is getting pretty skinny and beat up with no claws out there. My neighbor is feeding them but that is a short term solution. they need homes. Help. Anyone need a pet or no where to look for homes?

Hello there thats really disgusting for whoever abandoned the cats. Someone should of called the aspca and report whoever this person is.

  • Can you take pictures and post them on the site? Also try Petfinder and even Craig's List. It's urgent that they get off of the street. Domesticated cats that are abandoned do not last long on the street ... most of the time they don't know how to survive. Or they join a feral cat colony and face the risk of disease. The declawed cats needs to be rescued urgently. The cat will not make it on the streets. Feeding the cats is not good enough, they must get off of the streets. This situation requires urgent attention. Can you find three people to foster a cat for you? Have you tried calling rescue organizations for suggestions? Are all of the no-kill shelters full? Have you contacted vet clinics for help? Please post your cross streets. Maybe someone in your immediate area would be willing to foster a cat until a space at a shelter opens up or a home is found. It sounds like these cats really need your help right now.

Whoa, I agree with you totally but I have two kids under the age of four, I work, I have two cats. I don't have time to invest in these poor cats. My neighbor who is caring for these cats has a son who is severely disabled (lets try changing a 16 year olds diaper kind of disabled). She cannot do any more than she is doing. I have posted in 5 different spots but nobody has expressed any interest. I don't want them to go to a shelter because they will be destroyed. I will take pictures and try Craig's list though but my guess is these are going to be lost cats sadly.
  • This is the horrible truth about abandoned pets in nyc: there are few resources, the shelters are bursting, and too few people care.

Kensingtonmom, thank you for caring. I understand how busy and stressed you must be (i'm in a comparable situation). If you can at all find the time I have the following suggestions:

    1. Try contacting these shelters:
    Bide A Wee: http://www.bideawee.org/
    ASPCA: http://www.aspca.org or (212) 876-7700, x4120
    Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition: http://www.barcshelter.org/
    Brooklyn Animal Foster Network: http://www.brooklynanimalfosternetwork.org/

and the organizations on this list: http://www.animalalliancenyc.org/aboutus/participants/borough.htm

    2. If you or your neighbors know who dumped the cats, PLEASE report it to ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement ([email protected] or (212) 876-7700, ext. 4450). It IS a crime and they will investigate (and punish) the person.

    3. It's not pleasant, but if you cannot find fosters I'd suggest you turn the animals over to Animal Care & Control (http://www.nycacc.org/). There's a more than 50/50 chance that they would be euthanized, but for a domestic cat (especially a declawed one) with no street experience this is sadly preferable, in my opinion.

I wish you luck, and please keep us posted on what happens.

Brooklyn Foster Animals will take one and now I can't catch her. Ugghh. With this weather she has disappeared and is never around when I can bring her to the Slope. I don't want her in my house for too long since my cats vaccinations have expired and my toddlers will definitely be way too curious about a cat in a crate. The other two are beign fed by the crazy old ladies on my block who feed all the strays.

I am discovering it is almost impossible to find a home for a stray--so unless you really have 16 years to devote to that fluffy kitten, maybe goldfish are better pets for most people.

yeah, but wait'll you try finding a home for a stray goldfish....
  • So one is taken--two more to go. Actually we have several feral colonies so it is an overwhelming amount of stray cats over here...but these are recent drop offs to the street.
  • I have never had any problem (knock on wood!) finding a home for a domesticated, stray adult cat. I have actually rehomed 19 stray cats and kittens since December. Perseverance is the key. Go ahead and get on the list at all shelters, they will call you when they have an opening. You may even want to talk to Kitty Kind at Petco. They sometimes have openings. Have you tried calling 5th Avenue Cat Clinic and Hope Veterinary Clinic? They often take adoptable strays if they have room. Have you called BARC and Bide-A-Wee? We are all rooting for these cats. It would be really sad if they had to join a feral cat colony in order to survive.
  • Are there any new updates on these cats??
