Is it possible my havanese ate a whole bully stick in 1 hr?

I gave my havanese a bully stick for the 1st time ever and it has vanished. Aren't they supposed to last weeks? He's 10 lbs, 3 years old. Has anyone ever seen a little (but very determined and with strong teeth) dog eat a whole bully stick so fast? What horrors should I expect in the way of digestive reactions? He has a strong stomach, but still. ... Anything in the way of preventive care?

  • This does not sound crazy to me. My border collie mix can eat stuff like that in 20 minutes and has never had any issues. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets gassy, though.

The large, solid bones with meat from the farmer's market take him a little longer, but he still eats the entire thing.
  • My very old 12 lb poodle, with few teeth, can go through a 6 in. bully stick in 2 days.
So, it does not seem unlikely that a young dog with a full set of teeth can make one disappear in no time at all.
They love those smelly things. A friends pit mix devours a large one...maybe 18" in about 30 minutes.
If you don't think your dog is capable of that, check his favorite hiding places, like in between the sofa cushions....how do you think I know that little secret?
  • As long as this isn't unprecedented, I'm not worried. Not thrilled, but not worried. Thx.
  • I highly recommend getting a real, uncooked beef or lamb bone from either the farmers market or a butcher- it takes the monster a good while to become bored of it (probably 3 days before all the nasty meat is gone, eventually I throw the bone parts away after a week or so.) Be warned, though- they make Bruno's beard-fur and hand-fur (where he holds it) smell freaking disgusting. Really, really gross. And, if he's like mine, he'll want to bring it directly up on to the couch which is sort of disgusting... however, I think its better for them, is cheaper and lasts longer. Just be prepared to bathe him!
  • As someone with his "bully stick" still attached... I find buying these and allowing your dog to chew on them completely unacceptable. I mean, really...
