^ thanks. I was hoping it was imminent.

Yes! GSM, not 3G. Sorry. Supposedly Verizon is set to upgrade to GSM very soon, but right now they're not.
Also, I heard things about Verizon somehow restricting capabilities with its authorized phones. I probably have the terminology wrong, but I remember this being explained to me a couple of years ago. The way around it is to get an unlocked phone.
Hasn't this tower in the South Slope been out of commission for months? I wonder if Verizon lost its lease on a particular building. -

Verizon forces you to use their phone by disabling your ability to swap the SIM cards. My friend and I went abroad. Both of us had the blackberry 8800 (I think that was the model. I've upgraded since then). She had Verizon and I had Sprint. While she was able to use her BB, she was forced to use Verizons international rates because they locked the phone. I bought a SIM card and swapped it with the one that came with my Sprint phone. The only bummer was that I had to use a local number.

My iPhone has completely shit the bed for the past week. I'm on the phone with them now trying to get this issue escalated.
If you are having problems as well, please contact them so they know there are issues. -
I'm in the same boat again. So frustrating. I CANNOT wait to go back to Verizon (when they get the iPhone).

Am on the phone with them now (Matt Charles in tech support who I got from Customer Service). He said one tower is "yellow" and one is "green" but there is no way of knowing which tower I am hitting.
They have an upgrade on both towers scheduled for June 30 with new T-1s to handle capacity on these 2 overloaded towers.
He asked if this is happening outside of my house, but 90% of the calls I make are from home.
Puck - are you dropping calls just locally or anywhere you go? I am heading into the city later and will try again to see if it's happening everywhere. -
Basically when I come home from Manhattan after work, I just switch to EDGE because the 3G has just sucked for so long. I can't walk around my neighborhood (South Slope) without dropping calls or getting no voice or data service while on 3G.
-
He wanted to see if I went from 3G to EDGE if voice improved. So I said "so, my choices are switch to EDGE and get voice but have impossibly slow data or have decent data on 3G and drop calls?" I give the guy credit for not trying to blow smoke up my ass and pretend that wasn't the case.
He said he's calling management to get more info on why this tower has been in "yellow" since March (I say since Feb, but I won't argue) and will call me back.
I do have his name (Matt Charles) and his ID#C7031, but he is in an inbound-only call center and can't be reached directly. He promised a call back or if I need to reach him, to call customer service and have them send him an email asking him to call me.
I also sent a new email to the guy on the first page of this thread. -
I got a txt message this morning from AT&T with the following message:
AT&T Free Msg: AT&T appreciates your Mark the Spot feedback of 'FailedCallAttempt' from Brooklyn NY on 5/23/2010. We are pleased to inform you that we have additional network capacity planned near your submission in the next 60-90 days. If you have any further comments or feedback you may reply to this msg for free. Thank you, AT&T.
I guess using the free AT&T "Mark the Spot" iPhone app helped out. -
they supposedly have a major upgrade scheduled for June 30th specifically for the towers in our area, which have been in a 'degraded' state since Feb.

AT&T Says NYC Wireless Network Upgrade Complete
AT&T Says Upgrade Of NYC Wireless Network Is Complete, Should Help Prevent Dropped Calls
(AP) NEW YORK (AP) - AT&T Inc. has completed a project to improve wireless service in New York City, where the proliferation of iPhones has caused dropped calls, slow downloads and other problems, the phone company said Monday.
The Dallas-based company said that it has given more room on the airwaves to its "3G" network, used by the iPhone and some other phones, in the boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
The project has steadily improved service quality over the last six months, AT&T said. -
^ meh. I'll believe it when I see it. As for that last line - it's complete bullshit. My service went from fine to unusable in the past 6 months.
-
Flexi, I anticipated your reply the moment I read the article! That's the very reason I posted it.

Heh. Nice to know you are thinking of me

AT&T is supposedly upgrading the towers in our area to be completed by June 30. Let's see if they fix this shit in the next 2 days.
As the saying goes "I call bullshit!" -
Just out of curiosity, does anyone have the iPhone 4? Reception is reputed to be better, but no way am I dropping another $300 - and more importantly, re-upping with AT&T for another couple of years - until I hear positive reassurance that my phone might actually now work in my neighborhood.
-
I do, and it is definitely better. I get signal everywhere. To be honest, I didn't feel like it was a problem for me before. But, for what it's worth.
Also, while in Manhattan, I thought this was a very good sign. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/25/the-jimmy-fallon-test-is-the-iphone-4-dropping-less-calls/
And why not just spend $200 and get 16gb? -
I got the iPhone 4 and noticed a much stronger signal right away. The thing is a totally worthy upgrade IMO. You can also sell your old iPhone on eBay and get pretty good $$ that will cover much of the upgrade cost. I hear you about a new ATT contract though, especially when Verizon iPhone rumors keep popping up.

Its been a couple months...are the signals issues better?
