question about violence at 2007 Labor Day Parade
Hello,
Sorry that this is a dark and heavy post. I used to live in Bed-Stuy, moved away and am now moving to the Crown Heights area. This incident in Sept 2007 has troubled me since, and I am hoping someone can point me towards information.
I witnessed a violent crime at the 2007 Labor Day Parade. I reported it to the nearest cops and then got away from there. This particular incident was never reported on the news, although another violent crime was reported. I am wondering if anyone knows what I am referring to? I saw friends or family dragging the victim away while the perpetrators ran - assuming that when cops got there, there was no "there" there; that would explain why it didn't make the news, too.
But this happened on Eastern Parkway, in the middle of the parade route, and a lot of people saw. I am wondering if there is info out there that I have not been able to find.
Any info you can share will be appreciated.

Pretty vague and 3 years later, whats your motive?
-
Simply wanting to know is my motive. I saw violence, was traumatized, am hoping for resolution. I couldn't deal with it until now.
Yes, my post was vague. I do not want to non-consensually traumatize anyone reading the post. Anyone reading either knows about the incident I mentioned, or they don't. If anyone is not sure, or thinks they have info regarding the outcome of the event and wants more details from me, just message me.
Thanks. -
U might as well post the incident. Sadly violence is just a natural occurrence at a huge parade in an economically depressed, crowded and generally high crime area. Sorry you had to witness it

Actually, that's not a fair characterization of the parade at all. Given the number of attendees (about 2 million), there are very few incidents. Keep in mind that you should compare what happens to the number of incidents expected within a population that large in a given day. There are more people at the parade than the entire population of any city in the U.S. except New York, L.A., Chicago or Houston. -

Exactly and especially the bolded. -

Overly inflated, IMO. I'd say, and heard over the years reported, 1 mil. -

Yea, ok- you believe everything you read on teh interwebs?
Not here to argue, just to disagree.
Next Labor Day I'll be looking forward to your personal count, mkay? -
Was the incident a chubby guy getting his skull smashed after he started talking to another guys girlfriend? Because if it was ...I am OK and have not learned my lesson yet. I don't only do it parades either bars, parties, outdoor street fairs and it's usually followed by an ass whoopin that others consider traumatic . I just can't stop....I wish I could. With the level of beautiful people I predict my next beat down will be at the Brooklyn Bot Garden or the Farmers Market this weekend so you may want to avoid that area. I asked for my money back from Match.com after they said I could only be matched up with 1 soul mate after I ask for four per week. I thought the internet would help but I am back on the parade route.

I've seen the 2 million figure quoted in many sources over the past few years. What source do you have for the 1 million count? -

When you guys get an exact headcount please add 2 because I am going to bring a friend next time. The Final Call or anything Glenn Beck are excellent sources of facts. -
Some sources actually even say 3 million.

Oh please- there DEFINITELY isn't 3 million, and you KNOW it. It is widely acknowledged to be the largest parade in the country, that's the only fact I do know. Any predictions as to how many people attend is no way document-able. Notice how they always say "estimated"?
And fuck Gothamist. AND about.com while you're at it. -
BPL says 1-3 million.
2 million is right in the middle of that range, and is by far the most common estimate I've seen over the last few years. -
I finally know what to buy Carnivore & Watchuwant for Christmas...

You notice how your link says ESTIMATED?!?!?

Ever notice how people are so shitty at guessing how many jelly beans are in a jar? Same thing.
Fact is, no one actually knows how many people show up. I've literally watched every parade for the past 11 years from my balcony- not that means anything, as I certainly don't even try to count. I also witnessed the 'bad weather' years- where many food vendors went out of business and didn't/ couldn't come back the following year. The bad weather years- when practically NO ONE showed up.
I also think the cops who do these estimations are completely overwhelmed by the sight of what they see- all rookies! Bah!
It's all good though, let's just agree that its a BIG FUCKING parade and move on. Here's a liddow alien JUST for you, Carnie :alien: -
Well it is actually important, because when trying to understand a rate of something occurring (like violent crime incidents), the numerator is meaningless without the denominator. So the handful of incidents that occur each year translate into a very low rate when divided by the 1 to 3 million that attend the parade each year.

Well, with estimations running that wide, you're denominator is hardly stabilized and therefore not very concrete. But, it's all they've got to go on, so yea.
That said- I never argued with the rate of violence/ incidents per event. I personally think there's more fighting at the St Pat's parade, but more crime at Labor Day. The ratio of which is meaningless when compared to the level of intensity of each. Meaning, when you have two drunk Irish assholes throwing fists verses stabbings and gunfire.
But yes, the Labor Day parade is low in incidents considering how many people there are in attendance. There. Happy? Can I go out to dinner now? -
I wasn't stopping you... :P
I do remember them estimating 1 million back in the 90s, and it seems much more crowded now, although some of that is undoubtedly because of the way the cops have been boxing people in over the last few years. -
It is unfortunate that you had to witness such an event. I don't know the event you are talking about. It is the nature of people in these days and times to not "get involved". Not knowing the particulars and not trying to be harsh, may I ask what did you do?
if you did something, as simple as alerting the nearest police officer, then ease your mind with that is all you could have done and put it to bed.
if you did nothing, there were 100 people around you giving themselves the same reasoning for standing silent.
if it is an issue with the trauma of witnessing what ever you did, file it under the experience of life. This wasn't the first, and it won't be the last. -
Thank you, Mantic. Yes, I did alert the nearest police officer. I appreciate your kind words, thank you again.
Howdy, Stranger!
