  • We were too full of lunch from Korzo (which was great) to get anything but it smelled good in there. They had some new signs calling it Lopez Cafe, I guess it attack more folks. I will be back!

    Don't attack the folks :-)
  • Four and Twenty Blackbirds pie shop is open now (well, not on Mondays) on 3rd Ave at 8th, I think. A foodie friend had good things to say about the food and the service. I kind of like that they address cyclists on their website :

"We also keep a tire pump on hand if you happen to need a little air. Ask us!

Bicycle Station of Brooklyn sponsors a selection of tubes, tools and gear for sale, ask at the counter if you are in need of a fix."

They have some tasty sounding flavors. http://birdsblack.com/?page_id=39
  • Looks like the cafe/bakery at 7th Avenue and 5th Street in the old La Bagel space is planning to have some sidewalk seating. Public hearing notices are up on the side of the store's plywood fence, near their permits. Interesting, I see room for 4 tables max.
As for the other corner on that block - still no word on whether the Grecian Corner will reopen, with or without new ownership. They've been shut since July.
  • RE: 4 and 20 Blackbirds.

I found the service poor (they took my order and then started a conversation with another customer as I stood there and waited).

As for the food I had a Shoo-Fly pie and my friend had the salted caramel apple and really neither of us were that impressed. Each small slice is $4.50.

    The interior is nice though.
  • I noticed the sign today and then saw this on Brownstoner. Reis 100 became Kitchen Reis. DR, I expect a full report (especially of what type of cheese we are talking about here - I hope it's not standard brie and stuff):

I've walked by this place a few dozen times in the past week and have not seen a person in there. It's not very inviting at all- a couple of cold-looking wood tables and thats pretty much it. Out of all of the 5th ave options, this wouldn't be my first choice if not only because every passerby could inspect the intimate details of my meal...
  • I didn't realize your meal had "intimate details" :-) Does it wear frilly panties or something?

I don't honestly have high hopes for this place. I've been to Bar Reis a few times - especially when there was not much going further south on Fifth Ave. It was okay for a while, then became really thuggy (guys who needed to pull their pants up trying to look tough hanging out in front) and I've met Reis and talked to him a few times - he never really struck me as a guy who was a foodie (but I could be wrong). One failed food place already (I wasn't digging the 100 sandwiches concept - I'd rather see 20 done really well), and I agree that the space didn't seem too inviting from the outside (although Bar Reis does have a nice backyard). However, if I hear some good reviews, I may swing by. Right now there are a lot of other places on my list to try before I get around to this.
  • I passed it this weekend - apparently there were free mimosas with brunch, but no menu outside...it was on a blackboard inside where you couldn't see it unless you walked in. They do that at dinner....menu is on a blackboard but if you're walking by you have no idea what they have. I've seen a couple of people in there but usually it's totally empty
  • The chicken place on 5th st and 7th ave now has a "now hiring" sign outside....
  • Prospect Park is putting in a new picnic area, with tables and grills near West Lake Drive and Wellhouse Drive, near one of the spots where people feed the ducks and geese. The area has been fenced off for a long time and still is, but now there are the new additions inside. I'm guessing they will take the fence down soon.
  • My biggest giggle in a long time.

Hot Diggity Dog on PPW just changed its name to.....

    .....drum....roll please.....

I don't know, but they deliver

Sounds like a great porno - "ding dong....it's your munch box delivery man". :safe:
  • Noticed some work being done at the old Thai place on 7th and Carroll.
  • The Green Kitchen (5th between 11/12th) opened last week.

Lots of breakfast food, sandwiches, burger, paninis, smoothies, salads, and a unfocused entree list. Most stuff in the $7-10 range.

I need to check this out. I live so close and stroll 5th Ave.
  • there's also a new vietnamese sandwich shop called lotus which looks nearly ready to open on 5th avenue and president, next to the space which used to be matter.

that space also is papered and looks to be turning over into something new quickly as well...
  • Anyone know what's going in next to Watana in South Slope on 7th Ave? Used to be China Wok, been closed for a looooong time. Just got a new security gate and work is going in on the inside.

    Street view: http://bit.ly/ahYoTU

That block is, aside from Steinhof and Watana, the most depressing, underutilized block of 7th Avenue. Happy if something OTHER than a real estate office or nail salon goes in.
  • There are signs for "Lucas Fine Foods" on Union just west of 7th Ave, where I think the frame shop used to be.

  • Went by Green Kitchen for breakfast this past weekend. Not ready for prime time. Confused waitress, bland food, nothing really to recommend it.
  • i thought green kitchen was heavy on prepared foods and such?

    it's a sit down place?

Oh, where to begin with this.

    "LOCK YOU..."

    or

    "...is not suck."

    :-k
  • Does Munch Box have the same menu? Hot Diggity Dogs had an awesome Chicago Dog.

I think those signs have been up for at least the last couple of months. Not sure what the delay is with that space but I'm curious to see how Lucas is different than Blue Apron. It seems like an odd business decision to open up a speciality food store smack dab in the middle of Union Market and Blue Apron (not to mention the co-op!)....I have a tough time thinking of an ingredient that I'd need for a meal that I couldn't find at either store.
  • all lucas fine foods would need to do is stay open an hour later and i'd be giving them my business instead of blue apron.

while blue apron is great, it closes at 7 or 7:30. lots of people in the slope work late and don't even get home till 7.

i've tried to go numerous times when i've raced to get there before they close to find that they've actually closed up 10 minutes before their posted time. it's annoying.

but i also think everything in park slope closes too early, so maybe i'm not the best judge.

in any case, if lucas stays open till 8pm, i'll be happy. i heard they will have more prepared type food stuff (things you can take for lunch, etc) which would actually set it apart from blue apron and be fine by me.
  • ^^^ zactly. They'd be very smart to stay open late. Of course, Union Market does that, just a little way down the block. The Coop brings plenty of shoppers to Union, and people getting on and off their shifts ready for a snack...
What's the backstory on Lucas FF?

Last night I noticed Lotus Vietnamese sandwich shop had a sign up -- Grand Opening today. They also have rice dishes, bubble tea, summer rolls - and $6 bánh mì

Fingers crossed that they are as tasty as Ba Xuyên in Sunset Park.
  • I'm looking forward to Lucas as well. They have a website http://lucasfinefoods.com/.
It's under construction but there is some good info there. It looks like they will do prepared foods, catering. And yes - they will be staying open until 8:00pm Mon - Thurs and until 9:00pm on Friday and Saturday!

I especially like the part where they promise to be affordable.
