I was an early adapter of the Series 3 and now have Tivo HD. In the beginning it was a nightmare getting TWC to hook it up, but most of the techs have become pretty adept at it now. I've looked at the Premiere, but honestly feel no great urge to run out and get it (and this is from a rah rah Tivo supporter). A lot of the features on the Premiere are available on the HD (youtube, netflix, rhapsody) and it's less buggy. But I seriously can't deal with any other interface and the Netflix streaming works great - I would strongly suggest getting the larger hard drive (I have a 1TB eSATA drive which I'm pretty sure I will never fill up).

Still, compared to TWC's DVR, anything is better. -
I also have the tivo hd and have had every previous tivo model since pretty much the start. The only big drawback with the tivo hd movel is that is uses cable cards, and as such you cannot use any Video On Demand services such as HBO or the like.
You need to look at your viewing habits to determine if this is a big issue for you or not.
The other issue that is popping up is what is called the green screen of death, or siren wail. There seems to be an issue with certain HD channels (they think food tv may be a main troublemaker) in which it locks up the tivo with either a green screen or black screen and a oscillating sound that requires a hard reboot.
The problem has been around for almost a year now and tivo still hasnt fixed it. There if you google GSOD you will see a big thread about it. It isn't a huge issue but it is an annoying one especially if you come home after a long weekend and it didn't record any of your programs.
Stay away from the time warner dvr. It has the intelligence of a pre-natal infant. -
TW's DVR is unbelievably bad. The "Mystro" interface, as they call it, is THE reason I switched from TW to DISH.
-
Count me in as another Tivo lover. Its not perfect but its so much better than the TW DVR there isn't even a comparison.
The minute FIOS is available in WT, we will be signing up. I wish they would get here faster as TW is completely intolerable on so many levels. -
I liked tivo when I had it but won't go back mainly because DVR is cheaper and I like being able to record two channels at the same time.

Tivo allows you to record two channels at once now, as long as you have a cable card, which is the only option for the newer HD tivos. -
What is and how much is a cable card
-
Cable Card is a technology that some cable companies use to encode/decode (think: scramble and otherwise make unavailable) their signal, so people can't just tap or splice into the line and steal service.
The cable signal itself comes through the line encoded. You cannot view the channels unless it is decoded by the Cable Card.
The cable box or DVR/Tivo/whatever on the receiving end has a slot that holds the credit-card-sized Cable Card, provided by the cable company at the time of service install. The Cable Card itself contains the decoding key software that allows the cable box (or Tivo) to decode and properly display the cable channels.
Cablevision uses Cable Card technology in its digital set top boxes but Time Warner may not (my digital box with them in 2007 didn't have it).
If you're plugging a Tivo or other DVR into a Cable Card encoded service, you'll need a Cable Card -enabled DVR (with a slot for the card) and get a Cable Card from the cable company to decode their service.

so if i have twc i can't record 2 channels on tivo
-
If you have a Tivo HD, or Premiere, both of which utilize a cable card, you can record two channels with TWC.
There are two slots that accept cable cards, but if you get a M-Card (multi-stream) card, which is the default they will install now, it only takes up one slot.
I have a Tivo HD and it was a simple process for TWC to come out. The removed my old time warner dvr, I had the tivo already in place, followed the instructions that came with the tivo to go to a specific settings page. The TWC tech inserted the card, made note of a few numbers on the screen, called the tech back at TWC to activate the card and in 10 minutes it was all said and done.
The cable card costs I think about 3 bucks a month. If you are a current twc subscriber with just a normal cable box, you are paying I think 6 bucks a month for the box and like 50 cents a month for the remote. -
Thank you Fafner very helpful...one more question...if you have muliple tivos in different rooms can you send and receive recorded shows from one room(tivo) to another
-
Yes, tivo supports multi room viewing. Basically at the bottom of the tivo now playing list, any other networked tivos that are in the same house will have their recordings showing up in the list of other tivos.
You can also schedule recordings through tivo.com if you forgot to set something up before you left from home -
Thats great!! Thanks again you are relly helping me out...... I will be moving soon and really want to get away from twc and their dvr...now i have to decide between direct tv and dish..do you happen to know how their dvr's are or should I just pick one and buy a tivo..If so any suggestions on on which satelite company to use.
-
Tivo used to have a partnership with DirectTV, but that went south and DirectTV launched their own DVR sofrware which, although better than TWC, still sucked. It looks like they (tivo) announced they are playing nice again, and launching a new tivo/directtv combo

I have a co worker in New Jersey who has FIOS and he says it is very expensive after the first year is over. Also he says the internet connection is not much faster than cable. It is nice to have an alternative to Time Warner, but it is definetly no panacea as some of you guys seem to be saying.
-
Fios is getting installed on 7th and 16th street today.
-
In the event that it ever happens, and FiOS actually arrives... this is good news:

Oh wow, 7th and 16th is the corner I live at...do you have any more details on when we'll be able to subscribe to it?
-
Nope. Worker didn't know much maybe you will see someone in charge and can ask them. If you do can you ask when it will be available on 23rd street
-
Yep, will do!
-
Any updates on FIOS? I am on 1st st and 7th and have been patiently waiting for 2+ years now.
-
Confirmed FIOS roll-outs along 8th ave on 14th and 15th streets between PPW and 7th ave. Time to live s/b around 2 weeks per the servicemen.
