The Wrestler actor may be adding the Mongol emperor, in a film written and directed by Red Dawn's John Milius, to his list of upcoming roles

It might turn out to be a truly extraordinary movie – if it is actually made. Mickey Rourke has told the Orlando Sentinel that he is to play Genghis Khan, the Mongol emperor who died in 1227 after conquering Asia from the Pacific to the Caspian Sea.

The only movie I saw about the great Khan was 2007's predominantly pan-Asian production entitled Mongol. — Is Russia Asian? — Ghengis was portrayed by a Japanese actor, Tadanobu Asano. I thought his acting was good. But on principle, Armchair, I have to agree with you, Sir. It is unthinkable that M. Rourke, however fine he may be as an actor, be cast in the role. What farce!

Why doesn't Hollywood just let the great Zhang Yimou handle this? He would be the obvious choice, I think, to do it right. And he has shown an interest in works of greater sweep in the past decade, hasn't he?

How about the argument that a mainstream white actor potentially brings more butts to the seats than some lesser-known actor who looks the part? I hate it too that whitefolks are given roles that could be better played by other people, but the reality is that Joe Six Pack might not want to see Denzel in Richard III, but will pay to see Kevin Branagh.

I think the moral argument can be buffered by other factors.
