New restaurant on 5th- El Sitio Boriquen

In that doomed spot next to bagel world between 4th-5th... looks cute, the windows were open and I could see a nice little bar and a few small tables. There were people working inside but didnt seem to be any customers...I had my dog so I didn't go in and investigate further, but it looks clean and nicely redone. Any ideas?

Dang, I would go there simply for that window lettering! Add a nice caffe con leche? Done and done.
-
what does the name mean, anyway?
I couldnt tell if its a coffeshop or a proper bar/restaurant... -
Passed it as well...the owner is the husband of the woman that owned the restaurant that was there before...she was closed twice by the Board of Health, and then after she closed for good the company she had dishwashing equipment from had to keep posting signs that she had their equipment unlawfully. I don't think I'll be trying it in the near future
-
it basically means "the puerto rican place", as in "hey, let's go down to that Puerto Rican place"
-
Rat Salad.
-
DOH? You mean the people who closed DiFara's Pizzaria?
-
Yup DOH. I know the DOH went a bit nuts after the rat incident, but they closed them twice (to never reopen) - I also remember a post ages ago about them as horrible landlords. Based on the fact that they never shovel, I have to think the allegations were true.
-
Oh, they don’t shovel? They must be horrible. HORRIBLE!
-
Do they still do real estate there too? I want some yummy real estate.
-
the real estate place is next door if memory serves

Are you, by any chance, related to this woman? -
Was this the Drama Cafe? One of the worst-named restaurants in Park Slope history?

No. I just like the ITI and the O in the logotype. And I like caffe con leche, and if they offer a proper sandwich cubano at an old-school price I am there. Also, I just don't care about shoveling. Unless that is somehow a rare genetic marker? -

^ Huh? No comprende, it's a riddle. :-'
The whole thing is the same.
It's made of people.
Okay, that's just too many references in one post, ha. -
And wait...is someone getting a sexual favor in the "N"?
 :safe:

I don't know about it being a genetic marker, but it is pretty indicative of being a selfish prick. Not a trait I care for in a restaurant owner or neighbor. Good luck to them, but given their track record, I would not hold your breath that this place will be anything but a varmin infested crap hole.
Also - I hope you never fall and break a wrist on an unshoveled sidewalk. -

Thanks. I found this neat thing in the store. They're called boots. -
Yes it was the Drama Cafe. And about shoveling, I have to walk in front of that storefront in the winter and don't appreciate having to do a balancing act.

Right, cause nobody ever fell in boots.

this was the drama cafe. yuk. sort of like Landmark Tavern's ghost still befuddling us mortals.

Picked up a take-out menu from them. Got a very good vibe from the place when I walked in. Nicely decorated, and the menu certainly looks like they are trying to do something on a higher level than your average latin dive. Smashed plantain sandwiches look mighty intriguing, as I've only had them at El Cocotero (Venezuelan place in Chelsea), and they were very good there. Can't wait to check it out. I wish them luck. "Slightly upscale Puerto Rican" is certainly ground not covered in the Slope.
Correct on how the name translates.
Howdy, Stranger!
