Queens Black Out , Trains and Emergencies

You know, it took me 90 minutes to get to work today from PH (ususally 25 minute commute) and I was stuck in the subway for so long -without AC - it just made me wonder if I would ever get to work - or home.

If this doesn't tell you how fragile our infrastructre is, I dont know what does. The situation in Queens is even worse where some have been without power for over 3 days!! The 03 Blackout and Katrina were two things that demonstrated how fragile we are when power and services go down for just a short while.

What is going on in our city?
When it rains, the trains cant run.
When its hot, the trains cant run,
When it snows, the trains cant run.

Every day it seems we cannot get from point A to Point B without a problem. It is like we are one spark plug away from being Calcutta - but they have a more stable transportation system! Am I crazy or is it getting worse on the subway and trains?

Its just making me think more and more:
Does anyone actually have an emergency kit at home? Seriously.
Do you have an emergency plan? Bottled water?
I actually bought a clockwork (handcrank) radio that works with no batteries or electricity (I have family in Mississippi that survived Katrina: no cell phones, tvs, news, for 3 weeks because there was no electricity...) So I invested in one. I actually use it at the park sometimes - its pretty cool:

This may sound like paranoia and I am not sugesting invading a country or anything, but the sistuations on the train and Queens reminds me that you are truly on your own ( for a while sometimes) if something happens.

  • i thought that the blackout in 2003 was romantic.. lights out at 9pm everyone drunk, doing it, and yelling "who's your daddy?"... i mean, that's what was happening in greenpoint. disregarding disaster, good times.
  • Wow,

This is crazy, I am glad the temperatures cooled a little after the big storm on Saturday but I feel bad for those in Queens still without power:
