A few questions about the Jewish Hospital apartments — Brooklynian

A few questions about the Jewish Hospital apartments

Hey guys, it's my first post out here so go easy on me.:)

We, a couple, just saw some apartments on the Jewish Hospital apartment buildings (hmmm is there a new name for them?) They were beautiful and I thought good for the price. I read a number of threads here and joined there facebook group, but I thought maybe I could run some questions to residents and others.

1) One building we are looking at is 480 St. Marks. It was called the Dr. Leon Lauria Memorial building I believe. I understand that the whole complex was a hospital, but I wonder if anyone knows what specifically that building was used for? I couldn't find anything in a long internet search on that name.

2) I saw a thread with a lot of posts stating that the buildings didn't have a/c. Our realtor told us the heating unit also functioned as a/c. Is that possible in any of the buildings, or should I ask her to revisit it. Anybody have built-in a/c?

3) I saw some posts about break-ins in the buildings but it didn't sound completely out of the ordinary. Seemed to be some issues with doors sticking open and some keys stolen in the past. Any comments on that?

4) I understand the neighborhood is very mixed and has some history. I saws some posts out here that the area even next to the Museum isn't as safe as I would imagine. Can that be true?

I've lived in NY for over 20 years and know the deal all over as far as safety is concerned. I saw someone posting about using pepper spray when running, and about someone watching a mugging in front of the museum. I'm looking for just a reasonable balance between reassurance and heads-up.

The S train does indeedd seem to work great. Any comments on using it or commuting in general at 5 in the morning?

Thansk so much for any replies.

  • Lol.

    1. IDK

    2. The only building in that complex with in wall units, from what I understand, is 475 St Marks. Those serve as both heaters and a/c units.

    3. There are break ins. Welcome to BK lol.

    4. Neighborhood really isn't that bad, but for the $$$ I dunno about the Alma buildings. Me and my girlfriend are signing a lease on a place in the UES... ~700 sq ft, great block close to 86 st, $1900. You can get that kind of space for cheaper in better neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I know a friend in Boerum Hill in a similar sized apt for about $1700. I don't know what your budget is but I would look around some more.

One thing I will give the Alma buildings is that they have a lot of cool people living there. You can make a lot of friends really quickly. Just gotta be sharp about protecting your shit.
  • Hmmm trying to debate if that sounds encouraging at all. Read the lovely spitting thread and stuff about drug dealers and several particularly bad blocks in the area since I posted, getting discouraged. Believe me folks, I've been there and done that but the space we saw was huge especially with the balcony. Maybe a little west of there in Propect Heights proper. Any more input in surely appreciated and thanks.
  • I'm just giving you the real man. Don't completely knock it, but don't let that be your last look.
  • Got it, looking again later this week.
  • the shuttle is a grand train. i take it at 6 without incident -- mostly construction guys at that hour, everyone sleepy. i expect 5 is similar.
  • 1) no idea...sorry.

    2) I believe some buildings do and some don't - but also many of the posts about the buildings are old(er_

    3) I don't know anything about that building in particular -- break ins happen, and you just need to check your door before you leave, etc.

    4) I have lived here for a number of years and had very little problems in the safety area. It's a nice area and certainly bad things happen -- I had a friend live on the UES and was in the park by the water when a woman was stabbed in the face. Crazy stuff -- yes, shit happens, but keep your wits about you and say hi to people. Act friendly. Don't talk on your phone or yell drunkenly in the streets. Using pepper spray is a bit extreme...to me at least.

If you like the space/building, come hang out for a day and/or evening and check out the area. Visit some bars, restaurants, walk the streets, etc.

As for the S, I use it every morning to get to work around 7am and it's great. The only time I'm not a fan of the S is around 3:30 in the afternoon because it gets filled with loud high school kids who act like...high school kids. After a day of teaching, the yelling and whatnot is too much for me, so I walk from the 4 train up to my apartment. The S is great, but having the option to walk to the C or the 2/3/4/5 is also great.
