Hate new job. Can I get back on unemployment? — Brooklynian

Hate new job. Can I get back on unemployment?

After being on unemployment for a while, I started a new job last week. While I'm happy to be getting a paycheck, I think I chose the wrong job.

Anyone know if I quit, can I go back to claiming unemployment? I still haven't submitted my claim for last week. I wouldn't be able to claim for the week I worked, but if I quit can I claim going forward without hassle?

  • No, if you quit your job because it sucks, you don't get to claim unemployment. You have to be let go.
  • I am guessing that your SSID would show up in the new company's payroll filings and thereby eliminate your eligibility.

And doesn't a person have to work for some specific period of time before being eligible for Unemployment Insurance (again)?
  • You'd have to be let go: layed off or fired.

It's too late now because you've already started working.

However, there's no reason why you can't start the job search again and just never add to resume or tell possible employers about this current job. It wouldn't look good that you stayed there for so little time.
  • I don't know the specifics of this situation, but someone did what you are proposing - started working at my firm and then realized she wanted out. I think she was able to convince HR to "fire" her and got back on unemployment - but from what I hear, her unemployment benefits were greatly reduced. Not sure if it was a factor of her short time here or lower salary or what.
  • That's what I feared. Well, time to change my perspective and treat this as a learning opportunity, make some friends, keep looking, and enjoy the paycheck which will be larger than unemployment!
  • wow that sucks DD, hmm just hold on for a bit while looking for a new job while working this job.
  • Aren't you embarrassed to even be asking this question? You were hired to get paid in exchange for doing work, something a lot of people can't find right now, and you want to quit and go back to getting paid for doing nothing. At the expense of the rest of us.

Ha! That's funny! There are people on this board who have bragged that they're collecting FUNemployment.
  • A job is a job, even if it's only temporary until you find your right fit. Stick with it DD! And keep looking. I'm only freelancing now, but I love it and you too can try other avenues of support till you find your right fit. Stay positive!
  • Exactly, Mamacita. I realized I'm panicking a bit. It's such a change from 1) not working for so long and 2) such a different culture from my last job. Just got to go thru an adjustment period.

Who knows, I may even end up liking it! :)
  • DD, you're the best. Rock on. Etc. If I were less sleepy I'd say something more genuinely encouraging. zzzzzzz

Or think of it this way: At least you're not doing the census like some of us. Do you know how many reclusive hermits and other door non-answerers live in this neighborhood?

(Answer: "Yes; the same number of people as posts to Brooklynian. Ba-dum.")
