Commerce Bank doesn't care if you're a customer or not - the change machines are free for anyone to use. Before my husband and I moved earlier this year, we collected all his loose change from his dresser drawers (grrrrr), and brought it in. I think we ended up with something like $495.

I'm a citibank person too and I use commerce for the change thingie. It's actually a nice bank and I'd switch to them if they were closer to my apartment or my office. They are super friendly and they place is clean. They don't care if you're a memer or not, anyone can use the coin machines.
  • Yep, you don't need an account to use the change machine. They have 8 branches in Bklyn and 20 in Manhattan. I have the little booklet they gave me with the locations.
  • I heard they were going to open one on the ground floor of the new building on Flatbush across from Burrito Bar and Kitchen. Can anyone confirm this, or does anyone know more about it?

That location would be a big impetus for me to switch banks. :)

Speaking of bank locations... seeing the new Bank of America that's at 7th & Union we realized that there's that little cluster of banks in a two block stretch then nothing else on 7th as you head south. Kind of surprised no one's opening up south of 9th Street - granted there are a number of options on 5th between 9th and 13th, but I would think there are enough people hauling their tins, jars and sacks of coins around who'd like something a little more convenient.
  • Subject: Re: Banks on 7th Avenue

I hate that Bank of America sign. So glaring. Although I hate most signs/awnings on seventh ave. There should be a rule like say only two or 3 colors used but that's another rant.

The location that has been empty for so long 7th and 13th I believe would be a good location. It's a very large space. There is not a lot of traffic once you pass ninth st. though. Maybe that's the reason.

Mostly Modern guy is leaving even that would make a nice small branch. Course it will probably be a cell phone store or a real estate office.

  • that was me above.
  • I love this thread as this is a favorite topic of mine.

I was told by a reliable source ([in]famous lady who sat on her stoop for hours watching 7th ave) that at least one of the "bums" in the hood were dropped off in the morning every day by someone and picked up a few hours later. Another one would come in the morning, buy a cup of expensive coffee, dump out the coffee on the street and then use the cup for change. There are some legitmate homeless people out there, but there's plenty of scammer b.s. ones too who take advantage of people. when i see locals being all buddy-buddy with those guys it really pisses me off. Jake is notorious. I think he's the one being referred to all throughout this thread.

How many banks does Park Slope -- and all of New York City -- need? On 7th Avenue between Flatbush and 1st Street, do we need a bank for every single "homeless" guy to stand in?

I think it's actually an interesting, if accidental, coinage. Though we give people humantarian awards, the subject here is a business in front of which the GHGO7AGs congregate. A humanitarium award seems just the right honor to bestow upon a place at which humanitarianism is (allegedly) practiced. :)

I'm a lover, babe. Not a spelling bee champ, a grammarian or a punctuationalist.
  • I'm also not a good logger inner^^^^. Is there some trick to keeping this website's cookie embedded on my browsers?
  • Does anyone know what happened to the old guy who used to push a broom around 7th Avenue and Union street while yelling at people who came to close to him. He used to scare the shit out of me.

i think carnivore had a fix on it. pm him.
  • Hmmm...

I always thought/assumed that there was an a mutually agreed symbiotic relationship between the greengrocers and the guys with the coffee cups - they get free coffee and a crate to sit on, and in exchange, they watch the front of the store (prevent kids from running off with apples).

Evidence for the above? None. But it seems to be a universal NYC phenomenon, and I had just always figured...

As a guy (ie spared the lechery), I always felt these lone guys on crates sitting around were a good thing (my guilty conscience notwithstanding), especially late at night, since they were neighborhood regulars creating a presence on the street.

It seemed to me got increasingly unstable over the years - toward the end of my seeing him around he was yelling at pretty much everybody unprovoked. I knew someone that used to pay him to sweep in front of her store and she stuck up for him for a long time, but eventually he got scary and was just too much to deal with. Apparently he rubbed someone the wrong way (imagine) and got busted up pretty good.

If he's still alive it doesn't seem likely he's taking care of himself at this point.

I've been working a lot with "retail" banking folks and have learned some interesting things. Banks who are looking to open new braches like to open near their competition. If you see a Chase or a Citibank its not unusual to see a Bank of America or a Wachovia pop up nearby. Neighborhoods that are underserved tend to get prospected by smaller banks first (Washington Mutual, Apple Bank, Banco Popular, etc). The bigger guys won't strike out into new areas until there is some critical mass of customers which can support a new branch. So, don't look for a new bank on 7th Ave south of 9th unless the current ones get a lot of customers coming from further south to bank there. But in that 1st street area, there may very well end up being a bunch of banks/atm kiosks in the coming years.
  • 7th south of 9th may be underserved, but on 5th south of 9th you can't get away from them - there must be 5 banks in the first 3 blocks.

About as useful as cell phone stores...

And referring to "homeowner"'s reply above - there's a Banco Popular, Astoria Federal Savings Bank, a Doral Bank, and a WaMu.... at the very least. I know I've got to be forgetting one or two... or six.

Don't forget North Fork at 13th which used to be GreenPoint and is soon to become Capital One - can you spell M&A? And there's a Bank of America opening up further down 5th too.

Me too. Heck, I'd love any venue of trying to find cheap work pants. I'm sorry, but Beacon's Closet ain't a suitable alternative. :)
  • megan, the salvation army in clinton hill rocks.
