  • UPDATE: For this Sunday...

    1. Spoke with Sanitation this morning. They have replaced the missing street garbage can on 7th Ave btwn 19th/20th Sts. They will be doing graffiti removal on Sunday during our clean up/planting day. They have placed 23rd St/7th Ave on theri watch list for dumping. We have 2 drop off locations for the trash pick up, after Sunday's clean up, for Monday pick up. Thanks BK7!

    2. Green-Wood is dropping off mulch on 23rd St. btwn 6th /7th Aves for the tree pits. I have a note on "best practices" in order to make sure the trees remain healthy. They are also loaning us all the clean up gear we need for Sunday, being dropped off to me today. Thanks Green-Wood!

    3. Dolan and Christine are doing plant pick up Saturday morning (back in time for the mega stoop sale, i hope!) with a nice mix of perennials. We will have to pick the best pits, as not all pits will be able to receive plants (mulch, yes!) and some have already been planted by neighbors (please be sensitive to this). Thanks to the car loans from Ed and Beth!

    4. Bring out your cameras during the clean-up and planting, as we want to be able to show Citizens Committee of NYC and the press what a GREAT JOB we have done! (the press are invited...)

    5. I still need a block leader for 23rd St. btwn 5th/6th Aves to organize those neighbors, please get in touch with Jason or me ASAP!

    SEE YOU THERE!

I just wanted to thank all of those who came out yesterday for the "I
Love My (NYC) Block" project. We received an awesome grant though the
Citizens Committee of NYC to work on cleaning up our unique blocks that
boarder The Green-Wood Cemetery and the Greenwood Con-Ed substation.

We were 30+ strong (young families included, renters and owners) through
out the day which included sweeping and weeding the sidewalks/streets,
cleaning/planting/mulching many of the tree pits in the area and picking
up trash from the sidewalks and streets. While we were not able to cover
100% of the encatchment area (working from 11am-6pm), the areas covered
look stunning! My hope (and that of the neighborhood) is that this
initial clean up/beautification, combined with continued efforts with
Green-Wood, Con Ed and DSNY, we should be able to overcome the quality
of life issues facing our blocks: trash, dog poop, dumping and
    car-related drug abuse/sex.

If we make it a clean place, people are more likely to respect our streets!

    Some special thanks:

-Christine for selecting the nursery for the plantings and organizing
the seasonal plantings so our new perennials bloom 3 seasons strong.

-Mike and Dolan for driving to pick up all our great plants.

-Ed/Claire and Beth/Scott for the loan of their cars

-Nick Pisano and The Green-Wood Cemetery for the loan of tools and all
    the great tree mulch

-Scott Codey and staff at the Citizens Committee of NYC for all their
help and awarding us the grant!

-And most of all to my co-organizer Jason, who without his diligence and
patience...and muscle, this project would have never gotten off the
ground. When I had to take a back seat over the winter/spring, Jason
picked up most of my half and ran with it. Big kudos to Jason, or as I
    now call him, "Mr. Mulch!"

The above link is to a flickr stream of photos from yesterday, if folks
have their own shots, send them my way and I'll add them. If anyone
would like a high res shot for printing, let me know.

I'll also be sending around an e-mail about Saturday's successful 5th
Annual 23rd St. Mega Stoop Sale...

Again, thanks to everyone and the great effort, we made a difference!
