Time Warner Internet crawling today? — Brooklynian

Time Warner Internet crawling today?

Seems like TWC Internet has been incredibly slow since the big thunderstorms on Friday/Saturday. ANyone else experiencing this?

  • Yes, actually... I was just coming here to post to see if anyone else was having trouble. Ever since service came back on Friday, everything is extremely slow. One of my laptops can't even connect to my wireless because it keeps dropping out.
  • I noticed that last night. Today it seems to be better.
  • It seems to be a problem for them (and us) whenever things get unusually wet.
  • last night was super-slow for me.

I still want to know how that guy got RCN in PS :o
  • A couple of thoughts, and I too am having some slowness problems since the short outage last week... tuesday?

    1. There is a problem that occurs when water gets into the exterior cable boxes but I forget the technical explanation I got from Time Warner. It involves the cable tv service too.

    2. The first thing to do when you have a slowness problem is to unplug your cable modem, and if you have a router that too, and then plug them back in after a minute or two. This will clear up a whole lot of problems due to signal reaquisition.

The 2nd thing to do is call the cable company who can do a manual signal resend which is also successful sometimes.

    3. For the guest who keeps losing wireless signal this likely has something to do with your router and not connectivity, even if you have a combo cable modem/router.
  • Time Warner's tech support line has an automated message that says "Customers in ALL areas may experience slow browsing speeds and service interruptions." Wow. That's pretty extreme.
  • The Evil Empire strikes again. I call them every time and tell them I want credit on my bill.
  • thank god it's not just me. i was about ready to throw something.
  • Since I coudln't actually get through on the phone, I contacted customer support at twcnyc.com requesting a credit. They respond w/in 48 hours. We'll see.

I'm tired of giving them my money (and how the bill inches up all the time) for crappy service.
  • Let us know if you get credit - I'll have to try that!

I was also having major problems last night and gave up in the end. And I couldn't call them because I have Vonage and that wasn't working either! I'm fed up of using my cell phone minutes to complain to TWC. I should have them on speed dial.
  • I usually manage to get credit. I don't care if it's only a few bucks. Like I said, I'm tired of giving them my $ for crap service
  • Subject: This is exactly why I didn't want TWC

These people are horrible. They came to my house to connect what was supposed to be a DVR-intro package with internet. After the guy gets done installing everything - I make the mistake of asking, so is the DVR easy to figure out? His reply, "You don't have DVR."

I didn't even feel like arguing with the guy. He had already spent 30 minutes on hold with TWC himself to get them to activate the line. ha ha ha!!

Anyway - my internet is just creeping along since they connected it. I should have just continued to "borrow" from my neighbors. Seriously - that's more reliable than having your own internet from TWC.
  • At least they showed up at your apartment! My cable guy missed 3 appointments in a row. I ended up getting 3 months free internet/digital cable from them though.
  • In defense of TWC, there service is largely reliable and some of there guys are excellent. Based on considerable experience, it's the best high speed service in New York.

It's true that once you get someone on the phone, they are helpful. My problems can usually be solved with the "unplug your modem and then plug it back in" trick (why can't I ever remember to try that before I wait on hold for half an hour?) but when I've had more complicated problems, they've been good about staying on the line and trying different things until the problem is resolved.

I pretty much agree with that.

As far as the "free internet from your neighbors" thing goes, are there still people that leave their signal wide open? Seems kind of...not so smart. Security issues aside, I block mine up because it annoys me to think I'm paying for other people to have internet access.

If security weren't an issue, I would still keep my network closed, not because it bothers me to give someone else free internet access, but because giving them access to my network would slow it down.
  • Subject: TW Sucks

Yeah, ours has been slow too. I hate Time Warner and so many times I've threatened to cancel, but then when I explore my other options there aren't really any.

I get free Internet from the neighbors, but only because I'm Mactarded and can't figure out how to get my Powerbook to take the signal directly from the cable modem I'm paying for. I feel kinda bad about it, honestly. Plus some dude's playlist keeps showing up in my iTunes.

I've been using Cablevision since moving over here -- TWC doesn't serve my area. No problems with the modem so far as I can tell, although I don't like their television cable very much -- goes on the fritz frequently, the menus are slow, and they don't have LOGO (I want my gay tv, dammit!).
