Any good advice from Speech Pathologists?
Hello,
This is my very first post ever on any web site or blog. I hope this works.
I'm thinking about going back to school to become a speech pathologist. This would require a decent amount of time, effort and money so I just wanted to hear some people's experiences, those who have already become speech pathologists or are currently getting their degrees. I have quite a bit of questions actually. Any word of advice? Any things you would have done differently or I shouldn't do? This is open to anyone not just people from Park Slope.
Thank you.

Hey, I'm currently taking pre-requisites for SLP, so I don't have any experience (yet), but I recommend checking out this discussion board:
http://community.livejournal.com/speechpathology/
It's a mix of SLPs, audiologists, and students in the communication disorders field. Glad you're considering SLP! -
I can only encourage you by telling you a story about the difference a speech pathologist made in the lives of my children.
My older daughter, Miriam, was unable to pronounce the letter "R". She pronounced her own name, "Miwiam". While we thought this adorable, she was ridiculed by other kids, and could not avoid their cruel barbs.
Her younger sister, Carolyn, adored Miriam, and imitated her in all things, so she pronounced her own name as "Cawolyn".
You can't make this stuff up, right? But while it may sound cute and silly, it quickly became painful for both girls.
Enter a good speech pathologist, and both kids quickly learned to pronounce their names properly.
I say, go for it! and thank you in advance for the difference you will make in people's lives. -
Thank you very much for your feedback! It DID work!

Thanks for the success story, Booklaw!
