Vanderbilt b/w Greene Gates — Brooklynian

Vanderbilt b/w Greene Gates

So my girlfriend and I have outgrown our place in Crown Heights and found a nice 1BR apartment on Vanderbilt, almost on the corner of Gates. Can anyone provide some insight on this area (i.e. grocery shopping, nearest dry cleaners, general safety, things to do/see, whatever)? I'm a little leery of the A/C line for my morning commute...am I better off taking the 10-15 minute walk down to Atlantic for the 2/3 (I work off of Wall St downtown)? And not that it matters because we love our place, but out of curiousity, what nabe are we in...CH or FG?

  • Vanderbilt is the border between Clinton Hill and Fort Greene -- so it depends which side of Vanderbilt you're on, technically.

This Fulton corridor is pretty happening in FG, less so in CH, though it's changing pretty fast. I have found it to be safe, though there are some projects over your way. Your nearest big grocery store is unfortunately the Met on Fulton or the Met on Vanderbilt in Prospect Heights. There's a dry cleaners on Fulton between Vandy and Clinton. You're local bar should be HOT BIRD on Clinton and Atlantic.

I take the C from Clinton-Washington and it works out just fine -- transfer to the A or F or 2/3/4/5 if you need. Walking to the 2/3 seems like a waste of time. That train stops just as many times on its way to Manhattan.
  • I took the A/C to the financial district for years and found it totally fine during rush hours.
  • Thanks for the feedback! When you say projects, are you referring to those buildings by the track field area? I did notice them, and wondered what they were, but I didn't realize they were projects. What is so unfortunate about the Met?
  • Associated grocery store on Waverly & Greene is closer to you, but I have heard bad reviews. Check it out and see for yourself.

The C train totally fine, not sure why you would be leery.
  • I lived on that exact same block for several years and I loved it. It's a bus and major traffic route but as long as your bedroom is in the back you should be fine. Nice neighbors. I didn't bother with the C train unless the weather was bad opting instead for a walk to the Atlantic Avenue trains. It's a 10 minute walk with better train service. Also, good bus service within a block in either direction. Don't bother with the Met for groceries, it's out of your way and definitely not worth the extra walk. The Associated on Waverly (between Greene and Lafayette) is actually quite decent for basic stuff and you'll find some organic and fancier stuff mixed in. The neighborhood, regardless of location, will demand a little creativity when putting together your groceries for the week but it's alot better than it used to be. Choice Greene on Greene and Grand (about 6 short blocks) is great for fish and other specialty stuff. There's also a fantastic pharmacy (family-owned) on Greene and Vanderbilt for prescriptions and very basic drug store items. Good wine shop (Olivino) on Fulton between Clinton and Vanderbilt with a wine bar just a few doors down.

Are those really projects? I had no idea.

I never had any safety concerns. Basic common sense living-in-the-city rules apply, yes, but it's a heavily-traveled neighborhood area.
  • No they're not projects. They're middle class housing, some might be subsidized. But it's mixed.

Many people assume any big buildings with a largely minority population are projects.
  • I'm pretty sure they are Mitchell Lama's, but was too lazy to find them on the list this site provides:
