  • I heard the helicopter this morning, I guess the victim was shot five times. Apparently one of the two stores on the corner of Lincoln and Franklin is a hot spot. That's where the girl got the blade to cut Shantayah Lewis in the face.
  • These bodegas should be closed down!!

Male in a hoody fled the scene...... Should be easy to find.
  • does anyone know why it happened?

damn i live on that block and walk my dog past that store twice daily. i am thoroughly freaked the fuck out!

Hey, realize that anything can happen anywhere!
  • well, that explains why I saw the police helicopter....all the way in Windsor Terrace, but the timing was right - at 11:20

um, let's be honest: Things happen in CH more often.

But Joe1121, your chances of being a murder victim may be very low if you use common sense. http://projects.nytimes.com/crime/homicides/map

Very few strangers are murdered in NYC.

    Pro-tip: Remain a stranger!

You can continue to be a stranger to those who are likely to murder you by taking simple steps:
    avoid dealing drugs.
    avoid dating felons.
    avoid buying drugs.

robbery, on the otherhand, is far more frequent occurence ...and it involves strangers far more often. Anti-robbery Pro-tips:
avoid being intoxicated outside at 1 AM
    avoid dealing drugs.
    avoid dating felons.
    avoid buying drugs.
avoid displaying shiny things: jewelry, iphones, etc.

Homicide maps indicate "things happening" much more frequently in nabes like CH though

i just moved to ch a few months ago but i was born and raised in the bronx so i know how it is in the hood. but damn, there is more crime here than anywhere else i've lived.

also, i've been doing everything that you listed my whole life and things have been fine. i'm just freaked that i could have been walking my dog or getting my morning coffee when it went down.
  • welcome joe1121!

yes, I fear we are in for a violent summer.
  • so the word on the street is that it was over a woman.

    http://gothamist.com/2010/05/19/fatal_shooting_in_prospect_heights.php

first that girl gets her face slashed after a dispute over a man, now a man gets shot after a dispute over a woman. why cant they just go on the maury show like normal people?

Joe it's best not to walk your dog over Franklin toward Bedford. There is an abandoned(cafe) store front that has a damaged roll up door were most of the OGs on the corner store stuff,,all I have seen them put there is dope and if they are stashing guns there they are small guns. There appears to be something up because the cops are leaning on 95S. They leave an officer there all the time when 95S is open. If it's raining don't go into either deli they hide in there. Fisher and the chicken place are the least desirable for the shooting, selling and bleeding street scum. If you walk toward Classen avoid that long iron gate side(eprkway) side of Lincoln. The dealers sit over there and can get a good look up and down the block for cops..if they see anybody they go into the apts across the street. I hope they at least clean the blood off the street.
  • I guess whynot can add "avoid relationship drama" to the list.

Ain't nothing about getting a grip here. This is the third shooting on Franklin Ave that I've missed by a hair in the last year.

It IS scary and yes, there are certain areas on Franklin that I avoid too, but I won't say which ones, because you might identify me as the crazy woman zig-zagging up and down Franklin. :?

That the intersection at Lincoln that is like the drug dealing/sexual harassment/violence capital of Franklin. And how do you avoid it when you got to get to the subway? It's occupied like a tic tac toe box.

The B48 was helpful, now after cutting it, besides making the old and disabled walk, it made us as women quite vulnerable. We had it all figured out man. Now we'll be forced to walk through the bubonic plague when summer rolls around. Already looking forward to Memorial Day.

I don't think the innocent sushi delivery man who was shot and serious injured last year on Franklin Ave would agree with you:

  • "I don't think the innocent sushi delivery man who was shot and serious injured last year on Franklin Ave would agree with you"

That shooting happened across the street from my house. In fact, weeks before that another guy was shot just up from the sushi place and died almost on my front step. So I'm MORE than aware of the violence that was rampant last summer, thanks.

Summer's just beginning folks. Chances are better than not that there's going to be other shootings on Franklin in the coming months. I'm not happy about it. It's scary stuff.

So, in the face of this violence you have a couple options. A) You can move. If you're not going to move then B) You live with it. How do you do that? Should you live in fear? Not walk your dog? Not go to the corner bodega? Not patronize businesses on the street?

In my humble opinion, you go on with your life as normal as possible. You don't retreat. The rules for staying safe (as laid out by whynot above) apply now as they did before. Be cautious as always, be aware of your surroundings, be engaged in the positive aspects of the community.

  • ^ I put an extra space after the link and before the . so it is no longer broken, btw. :)
  • wow to get shot over a girl that totally is bonkers! well someone gotta keep it real.
  • Jeez, ilovefranklinave...just took the time to read your post. Still thinking about it.
  • i just read the link about the drug dealing part. hmmm drugs/money a dangerous combo to fight over. i'm surprise cops don't stand around that area.
  • Ah, the problem of a wide readership...

In response to people who appeared to fear they are at a huge risk of being murdered by simply going outside and living their lives, I pointed out that most people who are killed are engaging in activities that put them at a higher risk, and rarely are people killed by strangers. I regularly make such posts in an attempt to:

    a. Point out that if these activiites are not be part of one's lifestyle, one is actually at a low risk of being murdered.

    b. Encourage people to continue to support the area; If people avoid the area, it will only get worse.

CCCC alludes to something along the lines of "if it is you who is shot, it really doesn't matter how low your risk was. You are still shot"

To which I imagine the majority of us thinks: "yes, while there are ways to reduce ones risk, one can never eliminate it. Let's be honest with each other, we live in a high crime area."

We then hear (via a poster on I Love Franklin Avenue) that the deceased was loved by his family, and that he was doing nothing to deserve this.

Friends and family of the deceased: If you are reading this blog as well ...I am so sorry for your loss. I obviously have no idea who your brother was, or the circumstances that led someone to kill him. The death of a loved one is a horrible loss, one that takes often years to recover from. No one deserves to be murdered, and every murder is tragic. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.
  • Whynots post is correct. Also don't eat chicken, order sushi, buy cold cuts from Fisher or milk from the deli in question. High risk activity may be as routine as getting a roll of TP from the 99c store next to this weeks shooting location. These 2 delis 3 if you count Candy Store next to 95S to harbor and help the criminals of the area. Being any where around them is a risky behavior. Franklin being a main exit route from the subway also exposes you to high risk behavior. When the bandannas were tied on the street light/traffic light outside this deli...there could not have been a clearer flag for the police to pay closer attention. This poor soul is the one who didn't get away. He met his end on a filthy street in a pile of litter covered in blood. If you walk by and see some guy(s) just standing there it is not harmless, the tools of the trade are guns of every size and capacity. Some weapons commonly carried can discharge enough ammunition to maim or kill lots of people including mothers and children who may be coming to sketch deli for diapers or milk or candy as a reward for a school achievement ..The fu-cking police need to send moles into these dumps and 1st catch them selling illegal tobacco, under age alcohol and laundering money through the welfare system. The scum living and dying doing these activities should not be given any pity. Their normal puts everybody else and their families at risk. This time the bullet may have found it's mark more often than not this ends as a story of some poor kid caught in the crossfire. I don't want anybody to get murdered either..a good place to work toward that goal is reduce or eliminate people who have a gun in their pocket along with house keys and a cell phone. Lots of people yesterday had worried looks knowing any of us on this block could have been steps away from death
  • That's just a few blocks away from Nairobi's Knapsack, where a bunch of kids go for music classes at 10 and 11 AM on Wednesdays...my son included. So in all this advice about how not to put yourself in harm's way - should we pull our kid from the music class this summer? If things are going to heat up are we being stupid in continuing classes there?

Not only do I not want my son, his friends or any of their caretakers hit by a stray bullet, but I also don't want any of them to witness a shooting either.

Is it over reacting to pull them from the class or good parenting?

I would say that trying to avoid hot corners is about as rational and level-headed as one could be.
  • if i had ANY choice, i wouldn't bring my young kids to crown heights, let alone raise them there.
  • and in reference to the comment on ILoveFranklinAve...why did a drug dealer randomly shoot that person's brother five times? don't get me wrong, it's awful and the guy obviously didn't deserve to die, but it seems weird to me that a drug dealer would shoot an upstanding citizen 5 times in broad daylight.
