Beach
So, it hit me before that it's almost August and I haven't been to the beach (well, I went in Spain, but I'm not counting that) yet this summer.
What's your favorite beach, and how do you get there?
I have a car, so if I need to drive, please give me directions (I tried doing Jacob Riis park by going down Flatbush once and I'd rather stick needles in my eye than try that again!).
Subway to Coney Island would be fine too.
I just want to chill out by myself and maybe swim (if the water isn't too scary). The further away from knuckleheads and babies, the better

I'd go to the Montauk Point area. Last year I went up to the Hamptons every weekend by the Northern Pkwy. The drive up is okay it's the drive back that can really suck. No matter what route I took it seemed like I was always diverting to the Rockaways to get back to Flatbush Ave. So, you might want to take the LIRR. The beaches have some knuckleheads and a few kids but for the most part are quiet. The water is nice too.
What's your favorite beach, and how do you get there?

Flexi...Jacob Riis is excellent but Flatbush is the wrong way to go. Take the belt from Ocean parkway. It's a nice bike ride too.
Personally, I like Jones, it's where I grew up...The east end of LI is great, but that's a haul.
Long Beach is narrow and crowded, but big plus you can take the train there.
Coney is ok during the week but it's always too loud for me this time of year. Brighton is ok though. -
When I feel like driving, I'm a Robert Moses girl.
I can walk past the nudie beach and feel all cute since it's mostly people that you really don't want to look at naked  -
Where are you going to find a parking spot in Jacob Riis or any of the Rockaways for that matter during the summer? Three-quarters of the streets are private and the remaining quarter are packed to the gills with cars from Brooklyn. Thinking about it, doesn't Staten Island have some relatively quiet beaches?

i'm all about ocean grove, in jersey. less than an hour away. in between asbury and belmar, it's antithetical to what you think of as the jersey "shore". all church ladies and nobody in thong suits. i always feel skinny and pretty, and there's a giant sand bar. plus, good beach glass and sand dollars

Take LIRR to Bayshore, hop the ferry to Ocean Beach. If you leave by 9am, you can be on the beach by noon. Dinner. Then back home by 11pm. Worth the travel time. -

If you're going as far out as Fire Island, I would go to the beach at Saltaire. I also like Robert Moses. Gilgo beach is also nice and not too far, if you don't mind the bay. -
I've never been to Saltaire. How do you drive there?
I used to go to Gilgo Beach as a kid. I thought you needed TOBAY residency to go there. I'm not much into the bay side, but I do remember that some years Gilgo Beach just didn't exist because of storm erosion. -
LIRR to long beach
easy to find a pickup volleyball game
quick commute
clean beach
can't beat it with a stick -
Atlantic City!!! Yaaaay! The beach there is extremely underrated IMO. Of course people have other reasons for going - but the beach is great. We usually get a good summer deal - under $100, go on a Thurs night after work and gamble a bit at night. The next morning we ask for a late checkout, wake up somewhat early and hit the beach. then we get our stuff from the room, shower, put stuff in the car, and cruise the boardwalk for a few hours. Head back Friday afternoon just in time to miss rush hour.
It's great. Aside from that, we go to Riis (sp?) Park. There's a parking lot there for the beach so thats not a problem. If you ride your bike you can go to one of the "private" beaches next to it. Its a good time but don't take Flatbush. As mentioned, Ocean Pkwy to Belt. -
Somebody recently told me about the beach at Sandy Hook, NJ, accessible by a pleasant ferry ride from midtown Manhattan.
Apparently, there is a an area for birthday suits there as well, so beware  -
gotta tell you, i don't much like sandy hook. no personality at all.
