in case you don't know the back story...

What a fucked-up story. I, for one, am glad I live up the street from Cafe Martin. Can't wait to get my coffee fix there.
The only other choice around was that place on 6th street that's always closed on Sunday because they're some Christian-types (never in-your-face Christian types but why close on Sunday? The coffee wasn't very good either.) -
That's great news
-
Just walked by. Sign on the door says opening tomorrow 7 AM (Thurs, May 27).
-
Wow. What a first impression this guy gives! Too tortured to smile and greet a customer? A note to Martin, your coffee is great and your location is ideal for a lot of people that live nearby but lighten the fuck up dude. It is a coffee shop. Can you not be friendly and serve coffee?
-
Yeah, Martin needs to lighten up - I welcomed him to the neighborhood and he sort of grunted at me
-
I do know Martin and he is a good guy but a little off-putting sometimes when he meets people. The people that were regulars in the old locations broke through this easily and the vibe really did change.
Yeah I know that especially when walking in to a coffee place a warm greeting is not too much to ask. I just hope people give Martin a chance. -

It was really surprising and totally off-putting (well said). My wife and I ducked in for a late afternoon coffee after spending the day walking around the neighborhood. We probably went into 5 or 6 stores and shopped at the GAP farmer's market....every person that we spoke with was happy and the weather couldn't have better.

Too bad this prima donna couldn't be bothered to make eye contact and be pleasant ON THE OPENING WEEKEND OF HIS SHOP! Fuck him. -
Been there twice, Martin's coffee really is quite good. I didn't converse with him but who cares? I was there for the coffee and I liked it enough to go back the next day. Martin offered a look of recognition when I walked back in. I'm sure he was pleased I liked the coffee enough to come back.

Bluecat.. see that is what I meant.. He does warm up to people.
-
That's part of the charm of the place. Martin remembers your order and will say hello, but appreciates that some people aren't talkative until they've had their coffee. And he definitely seemed less stressed today than yesterday. Give the place a chance, please!
-
Never knew NY'ers had such thin skins, or are the ones compaining from the burbs or elsewhere. He always remembered my order, greeted me well and is very witty. But if you want some phony smile and an insincere hello, go elsewhere.
-
A 411 for all you single ladies out there, my friend and I went in yesterday and agree, Martin is tres cute. He's def got a Bogart vibe going on.
Of all the espresso joints in all the world.... -
Just to be clear - I am planning on going back - just saying a smile and a greeting would have been nice

I love how you ladies are pimping him out....too bad I don't drink coffee

-
Went back in today and Martin was quite friendly....I guess the second time is a charm
-
Trust me..Martin will be thrilled and charmed with the flurry of interest in HIM.
And we will see which Brooklynian chick is smart enough and fast enough with clever, sardonic and wit to keep up with this guy.
And the winner will get great coffee for free. -
^ if it's free tea and pastries, then I might have to go down there :-)
-
As a "Regular" from the old Cafe Reg, I was put off by Martin when I first went in. And the whole "second time's a charm" concept someone suggested totally ramps up until he greets you, remembers you, remembers your order, remembers something you said last time, etc. (And being a member of the fairer sex, I will say I fell for the whole cult of personality thing he engenders/cultivates - hard to tell for SURE that it's on purpose because it never gets to full-on Disney "Be Our Guest" proportions)
-
Went there for the first time this morning. Martin seemed very friendly to me and the coffee was excellent. First impressions count! I'll be back.
-
I've been back a few times...only on Saturdays so it hasn't been a lot...last time I went in he said "iced coffee, right"...so he really is quite pleasant
Howdy, Stranger!
