MHA you are free to have opinions & reactions... but I don't think it's fair for you to generalize black people in such a manner. In all my time I don't think I've ever encountered another black person who's subscribed to such a theory (at least openly)
Though I admit this may be some humor I am missing. -
Invisible lines, Cool the kid, and catwalkertexasranger-
You should not attribute your wisdom merely to getting older. There are some old, dumb people in the world...
...progress is possible. But, yea, it is going to take a lot of work by everyone involved. -
All of you - try this for one day in OUR neighborhood/community:
Appropriate for the time of day, when passing ANYONE on the street, just say
Good (Monrning, afternoon, eveneing).
Don't smile
Don't scowl.
Just acknowledge the other person, and keep on getting up.
Post a survey of your responses in a new thread. -
When I respond to 'hellos or nods' on the street, the majority of responses from men that I get are sexual innuendos and sometimes plain "in yo face". It's like when you acknowledge them as a woman, they magically grow cojones and think that it's an open invitation to verbal harassment.
So then when I decide to generally ignore 'hellos and nods', unless I know the person, I usually get called a stuck-up/dumb/stupid b*tch/whore (choose the combo of your "liking"). It just makes me feel sad to be at the receiving end of this stuff because I don't think that any woman deserves to be called derogatory names And they probably call their wives, baby mamas or girl friends that stuff too. Whatever floats their boat, I guess.
One day a guy I always see when walking to work asked me nicely why I didn't greet people on the street and I told him the whole story of how fed up I was, trying to distinguish who is who. And he understood. And he acknowledged the problem that the brothas need to shape up their act and stop harassing every woman that passes them.
Well, and now I greet him, because he's been identified as someone who doesn't have an ulterior motive. But I can't spend my day trying to decipher who has friendly intentions and who doesn't. How many more times am I going to be called derogatory names, until I'm done assessing every individual on my daily stretch? It's just not worth the hassle to me. -
TIL, read your history. There is historical precedent that justifies me capitalizing the letter 'B'. I am not going to capitalize the letter 'w', because history doesn't dictate a need for that. If you want to do that, then fine; I do.
Catwalkertexasranger. I don't need your love; it reads like paternal condescension. I cannot imagine being your Pretty Woman, and you my Richard Gere. No disrespect, but, I'm smarter than you. Seriously dude/dudette. Leave the condescension to ME, cool(Ain't this some shit?! I'm up in here talkin' about race and self-concept, epistemology, and all sorts of arcane esoteric deep-shizer, and this dude compares me to a dancer, a hooker or a CRACKHEAD.....And you whitefolks think I'M crazy????)?
CTK, you got a white woman; 'nuff said.
Love Child, my advice to you is to ask the person who says something sexual to you why they had to take it there. If you say, 'Brother, I was just saying hello to you,' believe me, he will not respond in that manner. But when you don't acknowledge him, he feels INVISIBLE, and when Black people feel invisible, they are inclined to go into angry mode. At that point you become the 'bitch who cannot even say hello'. If you are a white woman, and you say 'Brother' to a Black man, believe me, he's gonna treat you like Ava Maria.
ntfool, I wrote a wonderful synopsis of the relationship between Black people smiling and socal hierarchy, and the BEST you can do is try to find a contradiction? WTF? Is that what this has become? A game of, "Catch MHA in a contradiction?! Jeepers Creepers man! Why can't you respond to what I wrote? Doesn't anyone see how bizaare this is? ARE THERE ANY OTHER BLACK PEOPLE HERE (not CTK) who can back me up? If not, then seriously, I am gonna leave this party. What this exercise has taught me is that it doesn't serve my purpose to be here. I am not changing minds, or even engaging in dialogue. What's happening isn't discourse, but rather, aren't you wrong here or there? None of you people have responded to anything, but rather are simply looking for ways 'to win'. It's disheartening. -
MHA, to be honest a lot of your theories just don't correspond to reality... plus you yourself aren't really looking for a discussion, just agreement with your own ideas. This is shown by the ad hominem attacks you've hatched on everyone who makes the mistake of voicing disagreement with you
I have people all over from Brownsville to LI to Texas to wherever and I can honestly say you're maybe the 2nd or 3rd black person out of thousands I've met and hundreds I've built with with such strong views and free use of generalizations, etc. We are all entitled to our emotions; however when one abandons logic + fairness to substantiate their views it becomes difficult to engage in discussion.
I always respond directly to your posts and outline why I disagree in black and white (lol)... yet instead of responding to anything I say you continually bring my personal life into question. Yes, I voluntarily interact with whites and enjoy it (gasp!).... no, I am not as well versed as you in my own history, though to be fair all of my Ghanaian friends who were partially raised there who ARE probably as informed as you are don't share your views and also are able to interact with white people beyond just on a need-to-do basis. IDK... you keep claiming to be a victim but I think it is actually you who doesn't really want to engage in intellectually honest discussion... at least w/anyone who disagrees; seems like anyone who doesn't subscribe to your beliefs is flawed & unfit for discussion. -
Thanks for the advice, MHA, though no brushing up necessary; the ugliest, most horrific shit that's ever befallen mankind happened because people differentiated themselves from one another, and judged based on those rifts. Three obvious examples: the Crusades, slavery of all kinds, and the Holocaust. Let's agree to disagree that "othering" yourself or others is a bad thing.

Aaaaand it looks like someone's inadvertently stumbled upon ^ one of our fun little new features here, lol...

I am trying to understand how Crown Heights can move forward in one piece if there are intentional rifts built between groups

Cool The Kid wrote: I am trying to understand how Crown Heights can move forward in one piece if there are intentional rifts built between groups
it does make it harder.
....sometimes little non-profits try to appeal to only one group of people: "Empowerment training by us, for us. Nothing about us, without us"
Historically it is very difficult for such groups to get money from outside the community because they are:
small
reject many of the methods that funders like
won't measure outcomes
will only hire people from within the group they are trying to help
won't hold the fancy galas that are required to raise money because they see them as hipocritical.
How does one, after all, measure empowerment? ...we aren't talking about concrete things like "number of persons who obtained a GED as a result of your nonprofits efforts".
Two systems are sort of in place now:
Big agencies and non-profits that operate off of tax dollars.
Small store front churches that are dependent on tiny donations from their like minded members.
I refer to the later as "fighting poverty with poverty"
This guy always comes to mind:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Snyder
He was angry and committed to his cause to a fault.
Hey, even if some folks won't work with others.... that is often far better than them not working. In that scenario, we just lack cohesion.
In the present scenario we lack both cohesion and committment.
In otherwords, in theory we could create a situation where we all know how to read yet still dislike and/or don't trust each other. That would certainly beat the present situation: We can't all read AND we dislike each other.
Note: Feel free to insert "get health care", "have decent housing", "have police protection", etc in place of "can't read" should you choose.
...many people point out that the chances of one group liking each other before they get the basic rights of living in THE WORLD'S RICHEST COUNTRY are slim. -
I'm done folks. If we aren't talking aobut spitting, then there's nothing more to say. I've answered everything, I've taught CTK the meaning of ad hominem, and I think that the consensus is that we all feel bad and little scared about the shooting that occurred last week Wednesday. As far as I can tell, there are still people who are grieving over the shooting, and if anyone has any conference with the family, or friends, I am sorry you lost someone. It's pretty decadent for us to squabble pettily over the death of someone. This thread has devolved just a bit, and it seems as if my sense of why certain kinds of eye contact is not necesarily a good thing is discounted. I've tried to make it clear why I think such is the case, and that too was discounted. I have said this before, and I have read others who have said pretty much the same thing. There is no monopoly on truth. There is my truth and your truth, and the twain may be mutually exclusive, and may neer meet, but both can exist. It becomes wearisome to respond to everyone. I guess all of you are in agreement, and I am the crazy one. Cool. Call me Yossarian.

*spits at CTK* :P

It seems as though certain people are discounting everything you say :? -
I don't remember anyone saying that eye contact was always a good thing. Yea, maybe in 50 years we will "celebrate diversity" with smiles, until then mere coexistence between and among the various groups seems like a lofty goal...
Peace. -
Unfortunately much of MHA's most recent post above, especially the last bits, does not accurately represent the reality of posts that have been made here, but if MHA has tired of this particular discussion, that in itself certainly respectable and his prerogative.
If he feels has tired of this community at the moment, that's unfortunate and perhaps a bit of an overreaction, but also his prerogative. We hope he remains, and continues to contribute wherever he is inspired to do so.
In the meantime, although everyone may not agree with everyone else here on things (where does that ever happen), all viewpoints will continue to be welcome and heard here. -
I too have tired of this discussion and the other one, we were doing well for a good long while but not any longer, it feels like beating my head against a brick wall

I've been wondering if there's a more personal, IRL connection between Outside Child and MHA..... :?
Eh- but then again, I don't care that much... -

No I have not met MHA and when I said "we" I was referring to ALL A WE!!! -
Mobile battery barely lingering at 1%, so bear with me...
Let's have a show of hands...would folks prefer this thread to be retired?

I do not know Outside Child. Amazing that one has to think that if you are on my side, then you have to be biased. That there has to be some other accord other than an ideological one. Go figure. So many of you guys already apparently know each other, having hung out and all, and not once have I ever said, 'well, you're all friends.' But you don't see your double standard. If you really want to read a book and gain some understanding of the Black experience, pick up Douglas Blackmon's 'Slavery by Another Name'. I am about to start reading it on Friday.

I second Jeffrey's call for retirement if it takes an 'aye', well then, here it is: AYE!! -

I vote we talk only about new places to eat, like the park slope thread. (half sarcastic)
Just lock it.
...we aren't talking about the shooting anymore, and NONE of the media outlets covered the killing despite it being in broad daylight. so sad.
MHA's bird thread is nice and relaxing..... -
I think this + the other thread should be locked... too much side talk, there def needs to be a focus on neighborhood awareness and solving problems
-
I would vote against it being locked, but I'm just contrary that way.
-
But you people DON'T want to talk about the shooting! The hypocrisy of MOST of you is that when I say, 'I heard that the shooting was gang-related, that the guy who got killed was a Blood, and the guy who did the shooting was a Crip, and that the cops apparently have caught the guy who did it, but nonetheless we should be on our Ps and Qs because it might be a long summer, and (for the sake of levity, I sa 'you whitefolks, no smilin' we don't like it when you smile at us.' Most of you MFers IGNORE the veracity of WHO got shot, WHO did the shooting and the potential for violence and the first thing you want to say is,
'MHA, you don't speak for all Black people.' MFer, it was Black people who GAVE me the lowdown on the shooting, and the plausibility of repurcussion! Why is it that the same Black people's commentary of 'Man, I hate it when the ofays smile at you when they walk by," why is THAT invalid? It's invalid because you MFers don't want to hear it. It's like you want think YOU shape reality. It's your HUGE ego at work, or play. As I said, I am Yossarian in this little world.
And when I elaborate and say I live near a effing gang stronghold, and what I fear is being collateral damage in said plausible repurcussion, AGAIN, that's ignored, and in its stead you guys want to play 'reach out and touch somebody's hand, and buy the world a Coke.'
And when I say to you how anachronistic and unrealistic that is, 'Oh MHA, that's anti intelligent discourse of you.' Ya'll merely don't get it.
And when Outside Child says, 'Do you see what's going on in Jamaica?!' YA'LL STILL DON'T GET IT. THERE'S A BURGEONING CIVIL WAR NO LONGER BREWING, BUT SPILLING OUT INTO THE STREETS OF TIVOLI GARDENS, and you fail to see the parallels between there and HERE. You think that what's happening there is SO FAR AWAY that it cannot happen here, in Crown Heights, in Brooklyn? If you think that then you are truly sadly misinformed, and Holla Peno, I don't have to speak to every Black person in the whole United States of America to know what's brewing here.
Imagine if when Paul Revere came in and told everybody that the British were coming, he was soundly admonished for waking people up. what would happen?
If you think that there are no repurcussions, I dare any one of you to go and remove that little ad hoc memorial to that guy who got shot. Go ahead Holla Peno, I dare you. Am I wrong here, or must I take a poll from all the Black people to see if what I say next is true? You will get fkk'd up if you touch that thing. Not even the cops will touch that thing. So live in your little world where you call Black critique of white hypocrisy, angry, and misguided and warped. It won't be the first time. And when the spit falls at your feet, go ahead and say, 'He's just rude, it has nothing to do with race, class, or history.' Go ahead. Deny us our anger. Go right ahead. Comeuppance always comes to those who think it can't. -
Along with several others, I too agree the discussions in this thread and the other one have indeed run their course.
Thanks to al that have spoken their mind honestly and in a neighborly and civil manner here.
Locking it now.
Howdy, Stranger!
