Subject: New to Prospect Heights and have some Q's

Hey, I'm moving near Bergen/Washington and would love some opinions re. safety at night, where to grocery shop, a local gym, stuff like that... Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • PennyKF,

What block? Sometimes it varies a bit block by block.

Since this topic for this general area has been discussed many times recently on these boards, I will see if I can provide some helpful links with prior feedback.
  • Hm. I think it's been referenced in other threads, but I'm not finding any threads specifically about the area at or near Bergen/Washington.

But folks around there will probably chime in here with a general sense of it and recommendations for grocery shopping, gym, etc.
  • Welcome to the hood neighbor - I am on Underhill and Bergen.
Personally I think we are in the best part of PH but then again I am prejudice ;)
As long as you use common sense (be aware of your surroundings, don't flash you cell phone and keep your ipod in your bag) it is pretty safe here. You have a great little bodega/deli right on the corner of Bergen and Washington as well as on Underhill and Bergen. I tend to do most of my shopping on Vanderbilt. For my groceries I go to Met which is okay. If you have a car I suggest Fairway or the Key Food on 5th. There are numerous delivery options for food here also. We also have a great farmer's market every Saturday at GAP.

As for a gym I am not a member but the two I know of are Crunch on Flatbush and another gym on Eastern Parkway (the name escapes me right now). There is a YWCA and a YMCA not too far from us either.

You also have the 65 bus which runs on Bergen. Its great in the morning because it leaves you right in front of the 2 or 3 train to Manhattan. The mornings can be a little noisy with the kids walking to PS 9 which is on Underhill and Bergen.

Its a great area and I am sure you will love it here.
  • The grocery store on Washington between Park and Prospect is newly remodeled and friendly.

I am also a fan of the B45 bus that runs up Washington.
  • Welcome to the neighborhood.

Washington Ave has a couple of grocery stores south of Bergen; the NSA store that mg mentioned and a Key food further south. Both stores are so-so, but not great. You can usually get better produce from the Met on Vanderbilt.

Washington Ave is a pretty busy street so I've always felt comfortable walking on it anytime of night.

Conveniently, you have two bus lines that stop at Bergen/Washington. Unfortunately, I believe these two buses (the B45 and the B65) are about to have their late night service cut.
  • You're walking distance from Park Slope Food Coop. There are different opinions: for some people it's a not so much a supermarket as a religion; some non-members apparently view it as a kind of Stalinist re-education gulag run by hippies. But for myself and the majority of the ~16,000 members, it's just a friendly place to get much higher quality produce than in regular local supermarkets, at considerably reduced prices, in exchange for 2.5-3h per 4 weeks of your time on a task of your choice. Only downside for me is how crowded it gets at peak times.
  • Safe, friendly and wonderful neighborhood. Welcome!
  • I'm a Food Coop member too, and have not been shopping as frequently at the Met on Vanderbilt, but I have to say that they have greatly improved. They actually have better apples right now than at the coop. The Met has a nice little organic produce section with a good selection. I'm very happy to see that, and wil probably shop there more often as my life is getting too busy to shlep over to the coop all the time. It's so nice to have options.
  • Toured the park slope co-op yesterday and it's beautiful, especially for organic food which is more scarce around here than I'd care to think. Sadly they are not accepting applications for their orientation until they finish delayed renovations -- website says late June but they said July in person. Thanks for the Met food organic tip. We have a car so....

If you have a car then the Key Food on 5th and Prospect is great (they have their own lot and they deliver).
Also Fairway in Red Hook is pretty good.
Fresh Direct does deliver to us also.
    Welcome to the neighborhood.
  • I'd second Fairway. It's overwhelming how much they have.
  • I'll take your word for it that the Key food on 5th Ave and Prospect is great -- the tip on them having their own parking lot is excellent.. Prospect, wow. Like, 17th Street? What's a great Key food doing over there? :) Folks are saying they have good organic stuff or just good stuff in general? Thought a key food was a key food more/less.

Yeah, we'll hit Fairway when we really want to go bonkers.

We actually like Pathmark for regular food, got used to it in Jersey City (hey I lived in NY for years before that) -- fantastic sales, usually spend say 75 save 35.

Thanks for the welcome. Walking around here a bit too much in hot weather and sun seeking out stuff. Happily, decent Caribbean food is a great thing and the stew chicken at 3D's was out of this world.

  • The gym on Eastern Parkway you mean is probably Eastern Athletic Club, next to/adjoining a reformed synagogue. They have a decent special right now but it's only good for 11 months, then you get the much higher regular rate unless you sign up for a 2nd year initially.

They don't have many classes at all, I mean few -- the branch in the Heights has many more but who wants to go there to work out. They are not very crowded and have a decent looking pool.

Major caveat -- although it is said they are slowly building a 2nd elevator, the existing one (the gym starts on 7th floor) -- well, on the way up the first lady I met told me it often goes out, and on the way down a guy told me, "you see that sign that says maximum 5 people -- do not get on if there are already 5 people, they are very strict about that -- I've been stuck on it twice." "For how long," I asked. "Once for 10 minutes and once for 50 minutes". "Five Oh?," I asked, much chagrined." "Yes, Five Oh. I usually walk."

If you make it up, there's a nice view of the park and library from the cardio room.

  • Sorry about that I meant Prospect Place and 5th. I agree I am a big fan of Pathmark especially since they accept internet coupons. I like the one in Red Hook better than the one at Atlantic Terminal (again for the free parking :) ).
  • Oh, Yay, thank you thank you. Was trying to figure out what to do about parking for that Atlantic Pathmark. Excellent news on the Red Hook lot.

Oh, Key food prospect place and 5th. haha. I'm new here once again. Maybe it is less freezing than the Met on V. or the former Key on W., maybe it is special in that way?:)
