  • When I read about the ships Fog Horns it brought back a memory. I was laying in my bed in Ft Knox KY and could'nt sleep. Something was missing. When I heard a train whistle it sank in. I used to hear the ships horns especially at night while growing up on 12th Street. During WW2 the Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth were troop Carriers going over to Europe and Hospital ships coming back. At one point I could tell which ship went out from the sound of the horn. They sailed at night to help avoid possible detection by spies. Once they got out of the Harbor they were so fast nothing could catch them. They did not have the Verrazano bridge to contend with either. The midwest is very different from the East Coast, no big ships and they do not know how to make Pizza either. Here in Florida I hear an occasional boat horn but it is mostly train whistles at night.
