Park Slope CSA (Farm Share)
Is anyone else trying to join this cf of a CSA?
they still haven't cashed my check which I sent them in March. It is supposed to start next week and they haven't even told anyone who signed up for the every-other-week share which week you're on! And anytime there's a few and far between update, it comes along with a snotty note about how people need to stop sending emails or calling to find out whether or not they're actually in, or whether the check was actually received.
Hopefully the farm is managed a lot better than the CSA!

Jeez. Is this the Thursday pickup one? I really have wanted to do it the last few years but cannot always get out of work early enough and certainly not to work the required shift from 3-7 or whatever. Will be curious to see if this works out for you.
-
yeah, they actually added a Tuesday pickup for this year but it ends even earlier.
they should clearly let people do their work shift to help process all these contracts, instead of just complaining about how much work it is. -
consider joining the greenwood heights csa next time - the pickups are on weekends, and it seems well organized (knock on wood - first pickups tomorrow) and is not far - 6th ave b.n 18th/19th.

Yes, the GW one is super close to me, but I work Saturdays through June so it just isn't possible.

You need to log into the yahoo group for the messages. Lots has been said. They said checks are still being cashed. I don't think they have enough people to manage it all in a timely manner.

I am in the Yahoo group. The only messages I have gotten lately are about bread and egg shares.
I got a message on 5/7 that said checks will be cashed by 5/17. Then another email on the 26th that said "I ... now will be making the deposits". still nothing.
I mean, I balance my checkbook so I'm not in danger of overdrawing my account, but it's still incredibly annoying to have a check that I wrote in March not be cashed.
We all have to do a work share. Why not have some people do a work share processing contracts instead of handing out the veggies? and instead of sending out messages like this:FYI it takes about an hour and a half to log in 20 contracts and
payments. We anticipate at least 300 contracts. The contracts are
arriving just as a big work deadline of my own. I will not be doing
any more logging in until sometime after April 15th. I will not be
responding to individual requests for information. When all the
envelopes dated from April 14 and before are logged in, I will post a
list of the Tuesday and Thursday members. -
Ok. The Park Slope CSA is made possible by volunteers. They do not get paid. They have their own lives/work/children to take care of. And, they deal with loads of CSA work.
I am only thankful to them for doing the work. Yes, under these circumstances there may be delays - I've yet to find a volunteer organization of this kind that runs like a swiss clock. But these are small glitches at best.
Be patient. -
I'm well aware that it's volunteer run. That's why I've suggested that they should let people volunteer to help do the grunt work in lieu of doing their work slot at at the pickup.
No one is expecting the people "in charge" to do all the work. And I'm definitely not expecting to get snotty emails complaining about how people keep asking perfectly legitimate questions. If it's too much work then ask for assistance and I'm sure many people would chip in. I know I would.
This is starting on Tuesday and every-other-week people still don't know whether they're picking up then or the week after! -
I was in the Crown Heights CSA last year which was volunteer run, but things were very timely. Absolutely no problems that I as a person with a share felt. I'm sure things weren't 100% smooth to those running it, but it shouldn't be an affect on everyone.. That would drive me nuts about the check -- why would it take so long? I mean, I honestly don't understand how there is that much paperwork to do before hand that this would still not be done -- people submit paperwork, you put them in a spreadsheet, you deposit the check, and then you send out an email letting people know about pick ups. Yes, there's more to it, but the things that directly affect everyone should be done first...
-
Well, it is nice of you to be available to volunteer. Your offer and your suggestion, however, would only apply for the future. Why then not appreciate what is being done now (imperfect as it is, but heck, what is perfect?)
BTW, I also signed for EOW. -
i'm still waiting too. i signed up for the tuesday EOW pick-up...as long as i know by monday night all should be good. but yes, while it is a bit annoying, i am just happy to have all sorts of healthy yumminess this summer!

Well said, DDA! I'd said focus in the produce, be kind and be cheerful! -
This week's Tuesday shares are getting shafted--the truck driver got lost so they just didn't do the drop off. : /
We get a double share on our next pick-up, and getting a share this Thursday is not an option. Not sure what I'll do with two shares next week and nothing today. Sadness. -
OpossumQueen,
Agreed. I was WAY bummed when I showed up today with my bags. I tried to finagle a Thursday pick-up as well, but alas, no. I was looking forward to getting some yummy (and healthy) veggies. Like you, a double share in 2 weeks is not really much of a solution...I guess I'll bring some to work....
Sadness indeed... -
I'm new to the Park Slope CSA, and found this discussion by googling to figure out any details I possibly can about what is going on (e.g., what is the pick up time- at least I got that here!). Right now it's late Wednesday evening , and I don't know if I'm this week or next week's every other week for tomorrow.
I understand people defending the disorganization and delays because this is a volunteer group, but THIS degree of delay, when you end up not getting your share you paid for because you aren't informed about it, is extreme and totally unacceptable. Volunteer or not, someone needs to learn how to ask for help, because not doing so is coming at a cost to all of us. -
front page has a lot of info on times and such:

Have you been able to log in to the yahoo group? There are (too many) emails there about it all. Even if you found it, I can understand any confusion.
As for the screw up this week, I think it's ridiculous, but mostly the farmer's fault. Fingers crossed this doesn't happen again and if it does, I'll just probably skip it next year. -
c'mon, they sent out the list of tuesday odd/even weeks on tuesday! then they sent out an email cancelling pickup AFTER the pickup was supposed to start. the emails from the yahoo group are not any help, so I don't get why that keeps being brought up.
i'm a thursday every-other-week and still don't know whether i'm picking up tomorrow or next week. that's ridiculous!
i've been in CSAs in other cities before, and participated in who knows how many volunteer run groups, and none have ever been like this. I'm with Ruby, I don't understand why there's so many people who are saying that we should put up with this level of mismanagement. They may be volunteer run, but we are also paying them several hundred dollars!! -
I'm every week, so the EOW issues doesn't matter to me (luckily, it would seem). I agree that it's kind of a shit show right now, but I'm not jumping up to help them fix it. Hopefully the kinks are all here at the beginning of the season, but if this keeps up, I'll just know better than to sign up for it next year.
-
Okay, so I just read the email they just sent out about EOW for Thursday. Good grief. "Um we don't know who has this week, so the first 80 EOW's to show up get a share." Hahaha.
(On the off chance that their suspicion that something has happened to the person who was supposed to send the list, yikes. Even if that's the case, planning to send it out the day of if ridiculous.) -
this is a joke!
-
How much did you guys pay for this? This is incredible to me...
-
joehill, I hope you went over there today -- I talked to two friends who didn't know their details but happened to walk by - and got their shares.
oy.
but I hear the veg is really good. -
yeah, got our share and the produce looks great! hopefully from here on out it's smooth sailing.
-
I don't belong to the CSA, seemed like a real commitment. If any of you guys get veg you hate I'd be happy to buy it from you, or even better trade. I make my own pickles and chutneys.
There must be times when you know you can't eat all that lovely produce. Let me help you. LOL.
Anyone interested?
Grace -
joe, what did you get this week--greens, berries?
