PSA - Signs of a Stroke
STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S.. T. R.
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital -
(at 6:00 pm Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough...
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e.. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

SIDENOTE-
Both the "S" and the "T" portions as well as the "tongue check" of this can also be a sign of a relatively harmless condition called Bells Palsy. Bells Palsy is a (usually) temporary form of facial paralysis that effects one side of the face (sometimes both) and will cause a crooked smile, can caused slightly slurred speech and can affect the tongue and mouth (to the point of even being unable to close it.) It can be rapic onset with some people waking up thinking they've had a stroke when they are unable to close their eye or mouth. It can also cause dizziness (severe during immediate onset is not uncommon.)
SO if you or someone you know wakes up with a meltyface, go to the doctor but you don't immediately need to freakout and assume the worst. If the mental state is clear and the person is young and in good health, Bells could be the cause.
Again, GO TO THE DOCTOR if you experience meltyface, however no need to freakout necessarily, especially if you have no underlying health problems. I am NOT a healthcare professional/doctor/smart person.
**this message is brought to you by Carmen, who 3 weeks ago was in hysteric tears after discovering her own meltyface and assuming she was going to die. -
Subject: strokes
Carmen, I hope you'r feeling better now. I know how scary it can be when you try to do something you've done many times before and can't. A year ago last March, I went to feed my cats at night and couldn't hold the can in my hand. It just kept slipping out. I finally got them fed, then felt what I called a tingling sensation marching from my right elbow to my hand, then from my right knee to my foot. Had some challenges walking, but being stubborn, I thought it would be OK. Crazy thing was that I had a feeling it was some kind of stroke, but didn't want to wake my husband and thought it would be OK. I decided to pay some bills over the phone and when I went to write down the confirmation number, I couldn't write. Couldn't make my hand do what my mind was telling it to do. Stupidly, I thought I'd sit down and if it got worse I'd wake Bill. Luckily, it subsided and I thought "If it happens again, I'll go to the doctor." Well, it started again the next day and the Dr brought me right in and sent me to a neurologist and cardiologist. Turns out I had two TIA's (mini strokes) due to a PFO (pulmanory foramen ovule) in my heart or a hole in my heart that's been there all of life and this could have happened at 14 or 70. The first thing all Dr's said was I was incredilby fortunatethere were no lingering effects. The second was that women need to stop doing things like this and take care of themselves as they do their family. Don't assume it will be OK. pay attention to what your body is telling you!
