Just a little history lesson. It was called Anniversary Day for many years. It celebrated the Anniversary of the Brooklyn Sunday School Union. All the Protesant Church's would assemble at their respective Churches and then parade up to a central spot (8th Ave for the 12th St Reformed Church) where they blended in to the main parade. We would all (thousands of kids & adults) gather in the Prospect Park meadows, have a drink of water and then parade before a reviewing stand with many notables in attendance. Gov. Dewey and Mayor LaGuardia were regulars.Gen. and later President Dwight Eisenhower came. My Church having a Dutch Reformed backround had a hand pulled windmill and a differen young child would ride on it each year. I had the pleasure when I was 6 or 7 and ended up sitting on Tom Dewey's lap. My picture with him was in the Brooklyn Eagle but we never kept a copy. All the young kids in the parade from 12thst Reformed would wear Dutch Costumes. The scenerio was repeated in parks all over the boro and then (I do not know what year) Queens joined in. I think it was because so many couples moved from Brooklyn to Queens and they were raising their families there. Following the parade we went back to our respective Churches where we got Ice Cream and Soda. The ice cream came in logs from Droges(sp) in Bay ridge and was paid for many years by Harriet Weber Young who owned the florist shop with the big Hot House dome near the cemetery. It was called Weber-McLoughlin florist in those days. I know it has a different name now. 8)

  • To Anthony and any one else who may be interested. In addition to the good info Anthony gave you about searching out veterans, you can go to [email protected]

You must register (NO COST) and then you can request any veteran of WW2 be placed on the registry of the WWll Registry of Remembrance. You must know a few facts about the persons service but not a complete history. After a short search by the Registry your nominee is added and you will be able to download a very attractive plaque with the Honorees name and their branch of service. I did it for an Uncle and my brother in law. I then had the plaque framed and gave it to my sister. If anyone wants to see a copy of the plaque, send me your e-mail address and I will scan it and send it to you. My e-mail is [email protected]

  • An addendum to my last post. Terry, tell Debbie that her Uncle Herbie is listed on the World War II registry and if she goes to the web site above and registers she can see and print his plaque. There are several Herbert Browns listed, but the one listed as Brooklyn NY is him. O:)
