Outdoor World Cup screening this Saturday at Summer Streets
Summer Streets comes to Vanderbilt Avenue this Saturday
ESPN to screen World Cup games on the avenue
The kick-off for Summer Streets on Vanderbilt begins this Saturday, June 12 with a World Cup celebration including a screening of the World Cup matches outdoors on Vanderbilt Avenue. ESPN will be sponsoring an open-air viewing of the games on a large high-definition projection cube that will be set-up in the middle of Vanderbilt Avenue between Dean and Bergen Streets. ESPN will also be sponsoring the ESPN Interactive Zone, which will include lots of games and give-aways. Outdoor screening of matches begins at 10 am with the Argentina-Nigeria match and continues at 2:30 pm when the USA faces England.
This Saturday, June 12th, and on Sundays June 20th and 27th from 12 pm to 5:00 pm, Vanderbilt Avenue between Dean Street and Park Place will trade cars for pedestrians, and honking horns for dancing beats. Four blocks of the avenue will be closed to traffic and transformed into a pedestrian plaza for the second annual Summer Streets on Vanderbilt. In addition to the World Cup events, there will be inflatable bouncy castles, face painting and hula hoop contests, capoiera and fashion shows. Local bands will take center stage and restaurants will flood into the street with outdoor dining.
Presented by the Vanderbilt Avenue Merchants District (VAMD) and the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council (PHNDC), 2010 will mark the second annual Summer Streets on Vanderbilt.

And I just paid 30 bucks for 2 reservations at Woodwork when I could of watched it for free on the streets!
Anybody else pay for reservations? -
mods - I globaled this...

Woodwork wanted money for the privilege of watching a free TV event and buying their beer? Fuck this place.
(I know you get two beers in that $30 price but c'mon). -
Stuff White People Like
The World Cup #133
Every four years the planet comes together to celebrate the World Cup and since white people make up a portion the world, they are not immune to the excitement.
However, before you start planning out long watching sessions with white people you should be aware of exactly why white people get so excited about the World Cup. Though you may be waiting on baited breath for your favorite sport on a global scale, white people like the World Cup because it allows them to pretend they are European for a few weeks, and more importantly, it allows them to get drunk at odd hours.
Virtually every white person you speak to about the World Cup is incapable of remembering any actual event that took place during a game but can, with near total recall, remember how they got very drunk on Sangria during a Spain-Paraguay match at five in the morning.
From reading the above paragraph, the sharper ones among you have likely noticed that clever white people also adore the World Cup because it allows them to pair countries with their respective alcoholic drink.
“England is playing Argentina? Dude we gotta get some Newcastle then like, I don’t know, like some wine I guess?”
This plan will be consummated with a high five, a trip to Trader Joes, and the purchase of a soccer jersey that will be worn, on average, twice a decade.
It’s also worth noting the amazing interest shown by white women in the World Cup. While they generally find most professional sporting events to be boring, the atmosphere at a World Cup match is much more amenable. Mostly because they don’t have to drink light beer and there is a good chance that they might meet a European man, or, at least someone who might be planning a trip there. This is far superior to a hockey game where, at best, they might meet a Canadian. It goes without saying that for white women, the World Cup can’t come soon enough.
Of course, hosting a themed party around one of the games is a sure fire way to increase your popularity with white people, but at the end of the day it does not increase your bottom line. No, during the World Cup, the most profit to be made will come from betting on the games with white people. Not only will they have plenty of disposable income, they will follow the following betting patterns:
England is good
Brazil is good
Italy is good
Teams from Africa are cute underdogs and thus always worth a bet.
When it comes to talking about the event, it goes without saying that you should probably avoid trying to talk to white people about any of the actual players in the World Cup aside from the biggest stars. Most white people cobble their soccer knowledge together from UK celebrity gossip and a few games of FIFA on the Wii.
But if you do find yourself talking to a white person who actually knows a lot about soccer you are probably talking to a European, or worse, a white guy who tries too hard.
The latter is especially dangerous, as they have likely been waiting for years to meet someone to converse with about “football” and with soccer’s year round schedule, they will never leave you alone. -
In fairness to Woodwork, the outdoor screening was not confirmed until recently. They have received so much press around the World Cup that it was probably a good idea to take reservations in order to avoid overcrowding. And the best way to ensure that people keep their reservations, and discourage kids from coming along, is to have them put some money down.
The outdoor screening will be free, but there won't be any beer. And there will probably be a lot of young soccer fans. -
Thanks Jack, that made me laugh. I couldn't agree more.

^ That is no joke.

And neither is this:
Estimated to hit around 2pm, just minutes before the 2:30pm kickoff of
US vs. England.
So I'd call anyone that paid to guarantee a spot at Woodwork...
1) to avoid being overcrowded
2) to avoid kids
3) to have access to plenty o' beer
4) to be nice 'n cozy inside an actual soccer bar when the weather hits
...pretty darn genius if you ask me. Well worth the money spent, IMO. -
the $30 may also screen out annoying casual soccer fans who would ask you annoying questions about "what just happened?"....
(like me)
totally worth the $30 -
GOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Mexico and S.Africa are tied!!
(PS... If you don't have cable, Telemundo is showing the game) -
Mexico was robbed.

Accuweather appears to have moved the probability of thunderstorm to later in the day, if I'm reading this correctly:

Cross yer fingers... -
Totally worth the money. Had a great time. Will probably go back for more games.

Yes, this was awesome.
I was there watching most of it outside with 'ma dog, and the kids were oscillating between ESPN football toss games and various inflated bounce and obstacle contraptions.
I think I even spotted some Brooklynians out in front of Beast around 4:30p or so after the game.
Was headed over to go say hello, until the various assortment of beasts I was towing required otherwise. Darn.
Was that Christina and Em there? And BigGuy?
If so, sorry that events yet again loused up finally meeting Em in person. Curses, foiled again. *tweaks mustache
Double drats. Then again, if that wasn't you folks I thought I spied there (while wrangling pups of both canine and human varieties), there were some serious dopplegangers afoot. And sitting together, at Beast. What are the odds...
Great day though. THANKS FOR THE BIG SCREEN to whomever.
I will resolve out of sheer gratitude to spend beaucoup ducats at Woodwork unless or even perhaps in spite of being informed otherwise.
Who else went? -
i tried to go watch the argentina / nigeria game since everything I read said "Outdoor screening of matches begins at 10 am with the Argentina-Nigeria match" but the cube thing wasn't even inflated yet. Then I was stuck out trying to get somewhere else before the game started. bummer!
