5th Ave street repair

^ That is no joke.
-
2 plus years and they aren't even doing anything now. It's getting really annoying, not to mention the fact that late at night people don't even pay attention and drive any way they want. Who can we contact about this disaster?
-
This was talked about at the Community Board 7 meeting tonight. Apparently there had been a hold-up because of ConEd, then the contractor had problems getting men back on the job (not sure what was up with that exactly). But one board member was told that everything would be finished by the end of June; a second was told end of July. There is only apparently two weeks of work left to be done, mostly paving. So...we'll see.
-
"July of what year," I believe I heard a Board member shout!
-
Here's a copy of the email I just send Felix Ortiz. Please people we must continue to bombard our reps with emails to get this nonsense finished!
<Sir> -
whoops!
Here it is!
Sir:
The construction on 5th Avenue between 23rd and 34th Street is getting out of hand. I have not seen any work in months and the situation on the streets is getting more and more dangerous. It goes without saying that late at night the DO NOT ENTER signs are completely ignored. But just 25 minutes ago I saw not 1 but 10 cars blow right past the BIG ELECTRONIC BILLBOARD on 34th St, narrowly missing cars, each driver weaving in and out of the construction barriers and making lefts onto whatever block they needed to go to. In addition a Yellow School Bus made a left on 31st St ignoring the ONE WAY signs, and the bus had school children still in it putting those lives at risk. I can not tell you how many drivers I have encountered HEAD-ON that have simply ignored the signs. This madness has to stop!!
Our neighborhood has been inconvenienced enough! And now our safety and the safety of innocent pedestrians is at risk! -
This just in from the CCGH list serv
Greetings all,
Just a quick note that I spoke with our Dist. Mgr @ CB7 yesterday and he was able to get the next update on the "supposed" completion date of the 5th Avenue reconstruction. (however, don't hold your breath)
DDC has said that they will be completing the bus pad on 5th Ave between 23rd/24th Sts. next week, then repaving the entire stretch on 5th Ave the following week, so week of June 21.
As always, DDC means well with it's updates, but does not necessarily have the ability to keep it's sub-contractors on schedule.
Let's see. -
From CB7 today:
Work on the 5th Avenue Project will resume on Wednesday, June 16, with the installation of the bus pads between 24th and 25th Streets followed by paving of 5th Avenue for the entire length.
-
This is great news!!! I actually wrote Felix and his a team an email yesterday through his website to complain. Hope I get to ride my bike on this section soon!
-
Don't hold your breath if you "never" hear from the AM!

Thanks for the update!! Its about time

FINALLY!!!!
-
Is it finally done? Has anyone checked it out?
-
as of yesterday they had barely begun... june 30th as end date my a$$!
-
As of yesterday, they were done...at least to 36th St.
-
Just tried driving down 5th today and it is still blocked off. All the streets going east 24th, 26th, etc. are currently blocked off, so I'm hoping this is completed by the end of day!
-
It's all opened now. They had the entire area blocked off. Had to goto the 34th St. entrance to get into Green-Wood!
Finally! -
yesterday i was turned at 22nd st and from at least 29th to my block 32 wasnt even touched.... if they are truly done do we have an eta on when two way traffic will be restored?
-
Already has been restored. They were finishing up painting the lines/crosswalks and removing the old one-way signage.
-
hallelujah
-
ok... not sure about the area in the low 20s but near me in the late 20s and early 30s this is no where near complete. One way traffic still, no lines in street, only complete to 32nd St, no crosswalks painted. And with the long weekend and holiday Monday we continue to endure this fiasco.
-
they made it all the way to 36th St... I can see the light at the end of the tunnel... two way traffic will soon return to 5th ave!
-
Yahoo, though it must be a bitch working laying blacktop on 102 degree days.
-
I noticed yesterday that there is no bus stop between 25th street all the way to 17th street. Has it always been like that.
-
with the buses traveling on 4th ave from 39th to 20th until traffic restored that may be why you don't see any signs.
-
Does anyone know whether they will put the bus shelters back in and if the bike line lanes will appear? Or is that way too much to ask, given that it took 2+ years to complete the bare bones of the project?
-
Here was my response when I inquired about the bike lanes. I would also make a request into Miguel to put pressure on getting us our bike lanes!
Thank you for recently reaching out to our office regarding Bike Lanes on the recently repaved portion of 5th Avenue in our District.
The following message came to our office from the Department of Transportation’s Bicycle Program Director:
“I want to install bike lanes to complete this section of the network and you might be interested in knowing that there are now other proposals from the community to extend the facility further south to Bay Ridge; this still needs to be vetted.
I will follow up with our capital planning people so we can get the roadway restriped with bike lanes.”
We will notify of progress once we receive a more definitive timeline.
Best,
Miguel Hernandez
