Street fair on PPW today (Satruday)
I saw a bunch of the usual street fair booths setting up this morning on PPW.
Looks like it's a pride day event:

It is the Pride event......I just walked through the stalls there and back on my way to the GAP market........I had already had breakfast or I would have tried a mozzerepa or something.......
It goes from the circle near the Pavillion to 9th Street -
Why the fair? I can see a parade but why a fair as well especially when 7th Heaven is next weekend. Traffic tied up for 2 weekends is ridiculous.

This fair actually had a lot of booths that are not at the average fair. They had a mobile clinic and were doing free std testing, among other things. It wasn't very crowded when we walked through around 3:30, though. Fun drag costumes, at least.

^ agreed. There were a lot of LGBT (I always forget which order those letters go in)- centric booths regarding health care, human rights, etc.

There are free clinic's if someone wants to be tested. All the other stuff can be done at 7th Heaven or the 5th ave. fair. -

I don't imagine people go to fairs to get tested or learn about human rights. -
I don't see why an extra day of diverted traffic is a big deal. The vendors looked to be a step up from the Sham-Wow, tube sock vendors. I support that community's right to have a parade and celebrate just as much as I do the St. Pat's parade or any other parade.

The point of a mobile clinic is to make is readily accessible with minimal effort- people might not make an appointment (or go sit for 6 hours at the dept of health) but may be willing to pop into a mobile unit for 20 minutes if they see it parked somewhere. I wish we had more mobile clinics, especially since the oral HIV test swab is so readily available now and is SO cheap compared to blood testing.
And I highly doubt you're going to see many drag queens at 7th Heaven or the 5th ave fair. I'd rather see one of those two fairs get eliminated (they're identical anyway) and add another "unique" street event like brooklyn pride. -
The mobile clinic looked to be getting a steady stream of takers when I was there, and I think it's a great addition to any street fair.
