Best grocery store - supermarket in PS — Brooklynian

Best grocery store - supermarket in PS

stoneybrook
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I have used the search feature and only turn up posts years old and not in PS.

I am moving to PS in less than 2 weeks and have been using google maps to find stuff nearby in preparation of our arrival. There are many grocery stores and supermarkets in the area and they all have good and bad reviews.

In your experience, what is/are the best place/s to grocery shop using the following criteria:

-clean and smells okay
-fresh staples, produce, fish and meat
-good variety (ethnic items, brands, etc.)
-price

...in that order. I would gladly pay a premium for a one-stop-shop and a better overall experience.

Thanks.

  • what part of the Slope and do you have access to a car?
  • Flexichick wrote: what part of the Slope and do you have access to a car?
8th St. between 8th and PPW. We have a vehicle.

    Thanks.
  • only thing i gotta say is the pathmark on atlantic sucks ass but its cheap, but sucks! keyfood in north slope is better.

this is for the north slope.
  • For one stop shopping meeting your criteria (since you have a car), my vote is Fairway in Red Hook. They have excellent produce (not super-cheap, but not Whole Foods expensive either) , and great cheeses, breads, meats, and a fish counter with knowledgeable staff. There is a parking lot (although the weekends are crowded - I go during the day when most people are working), it does not smell and they have a fair variety of ethnic foods - depending on what you are looking for (they have a whole British food section). They also have a health food section, with a decent variety of vitamins, etc.
  • If you have a car, go to Fairway in Red Hook. They have ample parking. You can also take a bus there from 9th St and 5th Ave or bike. Then if you get more than you can carry home, they deliver in Park Slope.

For quick trips on foot, just check out the little shops along 7th Ave in both directions from you to see which have the specific stuff you want. None are huge, but they are nice to have. Union Market will likely have most of the stuff on your grocery list and is clean, etc. but can be pricey.

I like Steve's C-town on 9th pretty well (we're on 7th St), but partially b/c it's the closest "big" store to my apartment.

I will assume you mean the Keyfoods on 7th Ave. It gets mixed reviews, but it's close, open late and with your recommendation I trust it's a good, cheap alternative.

    Thanks.
  • ^ he probably means Key Food on 5th Ave, which is the best of the 3 KFs in town / The one on 5th has parking, the one on 7th sucks and their cashiers are nasty, and the one in WT on 11th Ave/Prospect has parking but is not that great for variety.

If you are not up for going to Fairway, 5th Ave. Key Foods is my backup. They have the best produce of the 3.
  • yeah 5th ave sorry :p, should have mention that.

I didn't see this place in my initial searches. I checked it out on google maps and with your recommendation along with the good reviews, this tops my list of grocery stores to check out. I like the mention of the scenic area and your mention of a parking lot. Apparently there is a place to eat right there, too.

    Thanks Flexichick.
  • Fairway is awesome and I shop a lot there as well, but consider Key Foods on Fifth Ave. as well. It (a) doesn't stink, (b) is great for staples and (c) has a lot of interesting ethnic items (more so than most Key Foods). Also has a parking lot.
  • google for some reason doesn't have that keyfood in their maps. the address is 128 5th ave between baltic and some other street. either sterling or douglass depends on which side of the street you are on.
  • since you got a car you can always goto costco :p.

Give us an update after you go.

My trips to Fairway often include a stop at Rossman's on the way. It's a produce market on 3rd Ave/26th Street. Open 24/7 and really cheap produce (not a big organic section, if that's your thing). You can buy some other things there (basic staples, coffee, bread, etc......no meat, fish, etc.), but that is not where you want to do all of your shopping (poor variety, although there are some bargains on certain items (if you really know your prices on certain brands, you can find them) - produce at great prices is the main draw here. I often find tomatoes, berries, etc. at half the price and better quality than the other stores.
  • Fairway is the closest thing to Wegman's you'll find in Brooklyn.

It's much smaller than Wegman's, as are nearly all NYC supermarkets (possibly excluding Whole Foods, which is much more expensive), but it has all kinds of features and specialty items that most NYC supermarkets do not have. And if you walk across the parking lot to the waterfront, you can see the Statue of Liberty!

(I grew up in Rochester, and still visit Wegman's every time I visit family there.)

Good info here. Another vote for Fairway. Foot trip alternatives are good. C-town is on the list.

    Thanks.
  • <- just spent $75 stocking up at Trader Joe's today (for one person - you could survive a natural or man-made disaster for months in my house) or I'd be hitting up Fairway tomorrow as well.

Fairway is really awesome - I love their cheese selection and their cheesemongers know their stuff. They also have a large selection of fresh pastas + sauces, etc. and an olive bar, a mushroom bar, and all kinds of other goodies. When you are by the cheese, you can also snack on some fresh bread at their olive oil bar (free samples, and since I often get hungry while shopping, I've been known to take 2-3 slices).
  • if you want fishes and other exotic stuff drive to 8th ave in sunset park you'll find all sorts of fruits and vegs etc... and fishes and meats :p. if you aren't in to that skip it maybe visit 3 guys from brooklyn fruit market in sunset park/bay ridge border it has parking across the street good cheap selection.

Wegman's is awesome - I go when I visit my mom in PA. When I had to take overnight trips to Princeton for work, I'd go to the one there for groceries + wine. I'd kill for a Wegman's here.....but Fairway will do just fine in the meantime
  • Almost forgot, Fresh Direct. Order your groceries online and have them delivered. Usually great produce, decent variety, convenient, but not the cheapest option. Glorious in the cold of winter when you have a long list.

A car trip to Fairway for me (which means I rented a zipcar and want to get lots of use out of it) can also include Ikea, Home Depot, Lowes, Pathmark (the one behind Lowes, and the big liquor store by that Pathmark. All things in the same general area, so easy when you need the crap those stores sell.

Oh, and if you haven't lived here before, don't stress about finding stuff, too much. Once you're here take a few strolls around 5th and 7th Avenues and you'll find stores for most of your needs.
  • Rossman's :

Now I must stop reading this thread as I am getting hungry!

(and OQ, I will let you know if I make a Fairway run soon)

When I read your post my search ended. I realize I am spoiled by the "super" Wegman's in Pittsford Plaza and something similar is exactly what I am looking for. I am from Ann Arbor and when I moved to Rochester 10 years ago and found it, I was amazed. When family and friends visit they expect to go there at least once while here.

If there is anything I will miss besides the friends I made here, it's that Wegman's.

By chance are you the dood from Rochester I met there in April while apartment shopping? The broker double-booked us to view a place on 4th St.

^^^ How did I forget! Fresh Direct rocks. Seafood is awesome as well as (most) produce.
  • AW - how does Great Wall compare to that big Asian supermarket on 8th Ave in Chinatown (the name escapes me right now because I am tired - but it's the big one with the parking lot)?

Our work here is finished :lol::lol:
  • You won't depend nearly as much on your car as you do now. Parking the car is so stressful that once you find a space, you'll be reluctant to give it up. There are relatively few garages for hire in the Slope; I seem to recall one on 11th Street. I keep my car in a garage on Garfield Place, but that's a bit of a hike from 8th Street.

And, as OQ says, you won't need the car for 90% of the trips you do now. Need milk and eggs? You'll find them on 7th Avenue and 8th Street. Dry cleaner? There are several on 7th Avenue, and probably one or two closer on 8th Avenue. Pharmacy? 8th Avenue and 8th Street. And so on. Restaurants? Literally dozens within easy walking distance, many of which are equal to or better than most that Rochester can offer.

    Welcome to Brooklyn!

I don't think so... I've lived in the same house forever, and do not expect to move anytime soon. But PM me when you settle in and we can have a cup of coffee or a beer together sometime.

It's funny... the Pittsford Plaza Wegman's is the only one I know (except for the one in Ithaca), and for me also it is the gold standard of supermarkets everywhere.

Thanks. I will check it out.

Now the name of the other place is bugging me  . I will likely wake up in the middle of the night thinking of it.

Somebody please put me out of my misery!
