the area is packed, but they have parking. My mom loves have me take her for dim sum and shopping in Chinatown - she can't get over how cheap the fish is. Maybe next time I'll take her to Great Wall.. -
Ok, last comment/question for the night.
Does anybody know where i can buy dried cod (bacalao) for my mom? This is more of a Spanish thing (she's Cuban) and she can't find it in suburban PA. I would tie it in triple bags, drive it to PA and be a hero with my mom and her bestie (another Cuban woman). -

Usta be able to pick Bacalao around the corner in "fruit store" on 5th ave but owners changed a while back. At the time I had a friend who could do wonders with this stuff! He taught me lots but I haven't pursued having al the right ingredients for this cuisine ( really peasant cooking in every ethnic sense) in a long time
Anyway.. locally.. my preference is always Fairway but I shop at C Town on 9th street most often. -
Thanks, Veets. Next time I visit my mom, I'm going to try Sunset Park first - I think the Spanish neighborhoods might be my best bet. The Chinese markets have a lot of dried fish, but no bacalao

Flexi, you can get it at Coluccio's - 60th St and 12th Avenue. They are a restaurant supply house but they also do retail. I go there every couple of months and load up on cases of San Marzano tomatoes, early peas, Limonata, Arancia, Nutella, pastas, spices, fresh ricotta and mozzarella, sausages (fresh and dried). Yes, they're Italian, but they love their salt cod.

Things are regular sized, but in cases. They don't have parking but finding parking is not so bad, and they'll wheel out your stuff on a hand-truck to your vehicle. It really is awesome.

I once bought lobsters at the Hong Kong Supermarket in Brooklyn. The price was by far the lowest I could find, and the lobsters themselves were perfectly fine.

OMG yes!! I used to live in Boro Park and I loved that place. Right next door also happens to be the cleanest best run Pathmark in Brooklyn.
Also the Key Food on 5th has the best shopping music out of all the grocery stores. -
I like C-Town for most things, but not meat or fish or specialty cheese. Grab or Union Market for those, or Greenmarket Union Square on the way home. Awesome delis on 7th on the way home seem to have everything, at a price.
This weekend I looked in many spots and could not locate the one thing I wanted - squid ink. Neither fish store on 7th and 3rd ish, not Russo's, not Union Market........ anyone know where to get it, or do I have to go to Citarella or Whole Foods? -
Weird - usually the fish store on 7th between 3rd and 4th has it.

Welcome to Park Slope.
Similar likes here. Fairway is great if using a car.
Keyfood on 5th ave is the best of all of them. 7th ave Keyfood is not too bad in a pinch and the guy outside has great flowers.
C-Town is good and always crowded so food is fresh. CVS drugstore same block.
Union Market ( 2 of them) and other similar stores along the avenue are very nice.
The Farmers Market on Saturday's at Grand Army Plaza is great.
Trader Joe's is on Court St. but no parking.
Love Costco, 3rd ave in Sunset Park. Liquor store next door.
Stay away from Pathmark behind Lowes. Ugh. Scary and creepy.

Fresh Direct delivers and has gotten pretty good with their cheeses and organic/local produce....plus you can order in bulk.
