A sock purchase witnessed

The shambling, slack jawed older gentleman who sells socks out of a large plastic bag. I've seen him walking 5th and 7th aves for years now, saying something like "socks, socks," as he shuffles along.

On Friday, I saw someone MAKE A PURCHASE. For all ya'll who see this guy and feel a stab of concern for him, I share the news. I had a smile on my face for two blocks after seeing that.

  • I bought socks from him while having a beer in front of Barbes a couple of weekends ago. He asked $7, I gave $10.

    The socks are OK.
  • The shambling and heavy breathing are an act. I saw him walking normally - slowly, but normally, once. He came upon a group of people walking by and immediately switched into "about-to-die" mode.

    Gotta have a gimmick!
  • market segmentation?

He is focused on serving those who are more willing to buy socks from someone with his act, than say the omnipresent folks at the street fairs?

    ....good call.

He buys them from the dollar store. Hell of a mark-up!
  • thought this was a thread about seventh heaven
  • He cornered me drunk at Commonwealth once and I felt sorry for him so I bought a three-pack for $5 (originally wanted $10). The next day at Save on Fifth they had the same three-pack for $1.99. My advice: tell him to piss off.
