Good BBQ? — Brooklynian

Good BBQ?

parksloper24
edited November -1 in Park Slope
A few weeks ago I had to go down south for work and ever since been craving some good authentic BBQ. I've been to Blue Smoke in Manhattan, but where can I find some good BBQ in the Slope or in Brooklyn?

Comments

  • Definitely NOT in the Slope :(

But man, you are opening a can a worms here. BBQ is like religion what denomination are you? What type of BBQ did you like?

Some people (not me) like Fort Greene's Smoke Joint, but maybe Fette Sau is up your alley. If you go, bring your own sauce though-their side sauces notoriously bad.

  • mmmm, I heart Smoke Joint.
  • Not responsive to your question, but both Daisy Mae's and Hill Country in Manhattan are well worth trying (although Blue Smoke remains my personal favorite).
  • if you want to do the neighborhood a favor, write to the folks at dinosaur bbq and let them know they should open a branch in the slope. they've just announced plans to expand, and perhaps if they know how badly we want some good bbq in the slope, they'll consider it!
  • It's not in the Slope, but a quick bike ride up to Williamsburg, check out Fette Sau BBQ. It's realllly great, and a fun atmosphere.

  • Obvs. Everett and Jones on the corner of San Pablo and University.

  • Best ribs in Brooklyn are at the Royal Rib House on Halsey St in Bed-Stuy. Its only open a couple of days a week (I think Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and there is always a line out the door. None of that fancy Smoke Joint BBQ, just the perfect rib, in the perfect sauce. Oh, and its take out only.
  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'll have to give several of them a try. And oh what I wouldn't do for some Dinosaur BBQ in the slope.

Déjà vu! The beer & bourbon tasting flight is quality there too
  • if any landlords out there in ps have something which sounds like a good fit, send them a note! :

"Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, the cultishly loved barbecue spot that started upstate but has a home in Harlem, is expanding all over the place. According to an email from the real estate and development firm BCD, Dinosaur is seeking spaces for new locations in Boston, Connecticut, North Jersey, and Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, and Westchester. For each location, they're seeking 6,000 - 10,00 square feet of space within "buildings with character." Here's hoping they find a space in Williamsburg to create a Dinosaur, Fatty Cue, Pies 'n' Thighs BBurg-Bar-B-Que District."

  • In Brooklyn -
If you want actual 'cue in the literal sense of the word (using real, hardwood such as hickory, for the actual low and slow smoking of the meat to its perfect state) The Smoke Joint in Fort Greene, and Fette Sau in Williamsburg are absolutely great bets. The meats (yum!) and sauces (love the spicy sauce!) at SJ are great. The flank steak at FS is deeeeelicious!

In regard to Royal Rib House, they don't smoke the meat, but cook it in sauce. However, you will pay less if that's a concern. I don't care for their ribs so much, but there are devotees - as obvious from a posting above.
  • Isn't there a place on Atlantic (in Bed Sty) that is supposed to have really good BBQ? I have heard raves about this place (I am almost positive it was here). Homeowner? Sweetea? Pitu?
  • What kind of bbq are you looking for? Carolina style (if so, which type?) TN style? Texas? Even NOLA has a brand of "bbq" (or so they profess...)

    hmmm. thx.

and hells yes to everyone who has asked which denomination of the church of bbq OP is looking for.
(homeowner, is that swine you're talking about?)

Carmen, are you talking about shrimp or something?

in my experience it's generally wood smoked and is seafood including shrimp and crawfish...I dont know if it actually counts as BBQ, though.

Also, Fyi the best NC BBQ is found in my apartment. Jussayin ;)
  • p.s. It is the NYC Dept of Health that prohibits places from proper pit BBQ.
which is why proper pit BBQ cannot be found in NYC in the same way as it can be found behind any dang pool hall in other locations.
  • Re: Carmen's post :

    Hail Mary, this is true!!

I was going to go on and on and even talk about her shrimp and grits... but she knows how awesome she is already 8)

Not a BBQ joint, but a soul food spot, Carolina Country Kitchen which is very simply NC-style soul food. Smothered chicken, fried chicken, Smothered pork chops, turkey wings, etc. Its pretty far out on Atlantic closer to Saratoga than Bed-Stuy proper.

And yes, the Royal Rib House is swine, divine swine.

No they can't just dig a bbq pit and get to cookin', but they can operate real smokers as long as their exhaust systems meet the code as it is written for nyc. I remember reading about the extremely expensive exhaust system that BLUE SMOKE (yum) had to install to properly evacuate its bbq smoke. So although there aren't any pits, I do believe that many of the places we have in the city do a fine job in turning out proper bbq - of various styles.

Also, isn't there a bar on Atlantic near Henry St. that's supposed to have excellent pulled pork? I think it's called Waterfront Ale House. Anyway, quite a few friends have talked it up.
  • Damn...a Dinosaur in PS would be freakin' perfect! How about opening it up in the old Blockbuster video store on 5th Ave. and 7th?

Ahh thanks - I now know what we are having for diner this weekend ;)
  • good thought pastoralia....only thing is that dinosaur is looking for "buildings with character" in their expansion plans. not sure if that one fits the bill...

but that place has been empty for so long now!
