CROWN HEIGHTS PRAYER WALK TODAY

All are welcome.

Myself and a small group of Crown Heights residents (from various churches/denominations) will be meeting up TODAY at the corner of Kingston Ave & St. Marks Place at 6:45pm Details below.

We will walk up Kingston Ave to Eastern Parkway, head west on Eastern Parkway to Brooklyn Ave and then circle back down Brooklyn to Brower Park (Brooklyn & St. Marks Ave).

"But seek the welfare of the city....and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare." - Jeremiah 29:7

    praying won't help the neighborhood.

    i'll also say that it would be interesting to see what would happen if all of the religious people of all denominations in Crown Heights (a lot of people) redirected their energy away from prayer and worship and toward action that yields actual, tangible results.

    then again, i don't pray and i don't do community service, so pray and walk away!

    Prayer in any form is helpful for some. It is an art form of sorts. There are a lot of every day New Yorkers who are very private about this part of their lives. We are not a perfect lot for sure and most of us try...to live closer to our beliefs than not.

    There are also people who do not have "beliefs" of any kind and yet they are out there giving a hand...many times without notice.

    Sometimes we are New Yorkers first and forget why we were praying but we are not a perfect lot. Of course, like everything else, people of faith are portrayed as screaming mimis or much, much worse.

    Do the best what we can do even if it is nothing.

    a prayer march could be the start of a movement by the community to resolve it's problems.

    praying is better then preying.

    Sometimes faith works...we see the bad in leaders but forget all of the men, women and children who are just normal folks cleaning up. They are not just Christians but of almost every faith. These folks try to keep their side of the street clean. "Religion" has a bad rap because it got and gets involved with economics.

    Religious people, on the other hand, do make a difference.

    This includes atheists and other non-believers who still believe in civic "duties" and caring for our neighbors.

    Civic duties...are not for everyone and a lot of folks move to New York and other big cities in order to "be themselves." Does this mean it is OK to litter and act out against our invisible parents? Don't know....

    What, exactly, are you praying for? For the safety of neighborhood residents? For its non-Christian residents to be 'saved?'

    Great question. On Friday, we'll be praying for more affordable housing/health care and more jobs that pay a living wage. We'll praying for racial reconciliation. We"ll pray for local school and hospitals. We'll pray for the prosperity of local business (the legal ones..lol) We'll also pray that God would keep residents safe from violent crime, and that God would empower discouraged school teachers and parents.

    And yes, we'll be praying for the salvation of men and women from slavery to sin that I believe separates us from God. As a Christian, I believe that first we must be reconciled to a holy God before we can be truly reconciled to one another. The many topics that I read about on this very board, speak volumes about the need for reconciliation among residents of this community.

    So in general, we're praying for the welfare/peace/shalom of the city, in particular, the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. But often people come with more specific prayer requests and we pray for those too.

    Thanks for coordinating this. I really enjoyed meeting with you all and look forward to next month as well. It's great to pray with my neighbors for the peace and well being of all those in our community.
